Nancy Mulvihill, Fire and Life Safety Educator for the Orland Fire Protection District, organized, implemented and coordinated the community-wide Orland Fire Houses Toy Drive.
"We have been collecting toys for children for more than 12 years, but this is the first year we decided to support local businesses exclusively," Mulvihill said. "I've had so many friends and family affected by cancer this past year, and that really hits close to home. The Treasure Chest Foundation can help ease the pain these children are going through and give them a moment of happiness."
"The Treasure Chest Foundation is especially grateful for this enormous donation," said Treasure Chest Foundation CEO and founder Colleen Kisel. "Thanks to the generosity of the Orland community and the hard work of the Orland Fire Protection District, thousands of children fighting cancer will be rewarded with a toy for their bravery."
"The success of the toy drive demonstrates that members of our community ? even those who are struggling themselves ? are able to help others," OFPD Acting Chief Raymond Kay said. "I'm pleased that the fire protection district has been able to facilitate this drive. We like to support local businesses whenever we can, and that extends to everything we do. We used to simply put out fires, but our modern definition means that we provide services not otherwise provided. In this case, we have been able to help kids fighting cancer with this successful toy drive."
The POTCF is a non-profit organization that provides comfort and distraction from painful procedures to children and teens diagnosed with cancer by providing a toy, gift or gift certificate in 41 hospitals nationwide.
