Florida's Rubio cements role as future of Republican party

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - U.S. Senator Marco Rubio made his first major speech at the Republican National Convention on Thursday, and his eloquence and ease on stage suggested it won't be his last.

The first-term senator from Florida had the daunting task of introducing Mitt Romney as the party's nominee to challenge Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

Coming on stage after movie star Clint Eastwood gave a rambling and at times incoherent speech, Rubio took the pressure in stride and quickly had the sign-waving crowd eating out of his hands.

The 41-year-old told how his parents came to the United States from Cuba in search of a better life and worked long hours to make sure Rubio and his siblings could succeed.

"My dad was a bartender. My mom was a cashier, a hotel maid and a stock clerk at K-Mart," he said. "They never made it big. They were never rich.

"And yet they were successful," he said. "Because just a few decades removed from hopelessness, they made possible for us all the things that had been impossible for them."

Rubio, a favorite of the conservative Tea Party movement who had been rumored to be a possible vice-presidential pick for Romney, was the last in a series of young conservatives to take the stage this week at the Republican convention.

"He's a bright and shining star in the Republican party, there's no question about that," said Bill Bunting, a delegate from Florida. "We're just blessed with all the young people who are coming into politics."

Speaking at their party's national convention can often help politicians solidify their position. In 2004, Obama - then a state senator running for a U.S. senate seat - delivered an electrifying speech at the Democratic National Convention that helped catapult him onto the national political scene.

Rubio had the crowd roaring and cheering as he criticized Obama for dividing the country and for failing to live up to his past promises of hope and change.

"In the end, in this election, it doesn't matter how you feel about President Obama. This election is about your future, not his.

"This election is not simply a choice between a Democrat and a Republican," Rubio said. "It's a choice about what kind of country we want America to be."

Rubio could be a vital link for Romney to the key Latino community. Obama leads Romney among Hispanic voters by about 40 percentage points, putting pressure on Republicans to become more competitive in states where the Latino vote could be decisive in November, such as New Mexico and Nevada.

Kim Bacchus, a delegate from Reno, Nevada, said Rubio's story as a first-generation-born American is one of his strengths.

"I think Marco Rubio represents all that is good about America," she said. "He's the best spokesperson for the American dream." (Additional reporting by Andy Sullivan; Editing by Leslie Adler)

Isaac forces evacuation of pets from St. John the Baptist, other ...

BATON ROUGE -- Three tractor trailer loads of pets were moved from Isaac-flooded St. John the Baptist Parish to animal shelters in north Louisiana and more will be on their way there Friday, state officials said.

Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Mike Strain said that 145 pets -- from dogs and cats to birds, guinea pigs and turtles -- were evacuated with their owners from the flooded parish.

Strain said the influx brings the overall number of evacuated animals to 195 since Isaac unleashed winds and rains on the state Tuesday.

Strain said the total is expected to swell as animals and owners are evacuated from flooded parishes in south Louisiana.

He said 179 pets have been taken to the state's "mega- evacuation center" in Alexandria and another 16 have been transported to Haughton, near Shreveport.

Strain said the idea is to keep the pets and owners together.

He said the Alexandria shelter has room so "owners are co-habitated with their pets" in different areas.

The Haughton facility houses animals and their owners are housed in a separated facility nearby.

"The idea is to keep the owners and the pets together so people?can take their dogs for a walk" and be with their animals in a stressful time, Strain said.

Former Juvenito Employees Accuse Head Chef of Abuse

Man, this one's fucked up, guys.?

Earlier this week, a young woman -- who wishes to remain anonymous -- sent us an email about her experience interviewing for a job as a server at 5th Avenue's?Juvenito. While meeting with head chef Juvenito Avila, she claims that he mentioned the existence of a blog that some former, disgruntled employees had created in an attempt to sour his reputation. On this blog, titled "Juvenito Disclosed,"?22 former restaurant employees accuse the 39 year-old?restaurant runner of public berating, grueling 17-hour work days, and sexual harrassment.?

Here's the full story from the Juvenito Disclosed blog:

You may have stumbled upon, passed by, or regularly dined at an establishment in Park Slope, Brooklyn known formerly as Get Fresh Table & Market, and currently Juventino.

If you?ve stopped in to dine you have likely enjoyed a meal that incorporates fresh, seasonal ingredients in a quaint and comfortable setting. We know how enchanting this place can be, because these elements attracted us to the restaurant too.?We are the servers who, for the past four years, have helped offer a dining experience worthy of the restaurant?s exceptional food and charming aesthetic.

Yet appearances deceive. Each of us, while working in this environment, has experienced an intolerable level of abuse from the owner who shares his name with the restaurant. The cycle begins with the interview, when Juventino tells each applicant that his methods are ?different? than she may be used to, but that the financial gain will justify the means. It?s not a coincidence that most of the new hires at this restaurant are young women with no experience in the industry, and who, more often than not, speak English as their second or third language. These factors make the initial appeal of monetary rewards even more persuasive, and the incentive to endure the abuse greater.

Public berating is commonplace, usually stemming from Juventino?s inconsistent and severe communication style, which is often exacerbated by drinking. Intelligent servers are made to feel incapable, and feedback is confusingly encouraged, discouraged, and ultimately dismissed. Employees are expected to become beholden to Juventino ? to the point where everything else, including family and relationship commitments, must be put aside.?This fosters an environment in which, at its least injurious, 17-hour workdays without breaks are expected, and at its most despicable,?young women are subjected to unwanted sexual advances?behind the closed and locked doors of Juventino?s office.?

The mental and physical toll on the staff is palpable. Former employees have experienced nightmares and anxiety for an entire year after leaving their posts. Others have lost unhealthy amounts of weight or gotten sick from the sheer exhaustion of making a constant effort to avoid Juventino?s moodswings.??Almost all of us have remarked that it was the most abusive workplace they have ever experienced.

?

We understand that it is bold to write a public letter of this nature, and it is not an action we have taken without serious thought and deliberation.?Many of us have confronted Juventino about his misuse of authority, giving him the opportunity for dialogue and most importantly, change. Yet, he has consistently refused to acknowledge or take responsibility for his actions, even choosing to spread falsehoods about former employees who left after feeling mistreated.

We acknowledge that mistreatment is not unheard of in the restaurant industry.? This issue, however, is particularly pernicious in a small business such as this, where power and control is not distributed beyond the owner. Without a system of checks and balances, the terms of abuse can be improperly justified as a managerial style of choice and continue for years without accountability or consequence.

We are writing you today in order to give you the informed choice of your patronage.

In a community concerned with workers? rights and conscious consumerism, we feel it is only fair to enlighten you to an environment that exists in your very neighborhood. We believe Juventino is doing a disservice not only to his servers of the past and present, but to his incredibly hardworking and honorable cooks, and ultimately to you, the unwitting guest whose patronage sustains his business and misbehavior.

We thank you for your time and support,

22 Former Juventino Employees

"When he was talking about the letter," the interviewee explained, "he didn't seem to take it seriously, like it was everybody else's fault and that he didn't need to change a thing about himself."

Jezebel recently spoke with Avila?about the allegations, which he adamently denied.?"If I have done something, I'm guilty of being aggressive and strong minded," he explained, adding,?"But I have a mom, and I have sisters, and [sexual harassment] is something I would never condone or be a part of. I know it's common at restaurants, but I don't accept it." Jezebel also spoke with Juvenito's owner,?Rebecca Uberti, who?called the sexual harassment allegations "100% unfounded and untrue" and said they were "detailed lies from disgruntled employees who may or may not have been terminated for poor job performance." It's worth noting that Uberti has been in a relationship with Juvenito Avila since 1996. And though both Avila and Uberti claim that no formal complaints about these allegations of abuse were ever lodged, many of the former employees claim that they spoke up about the abuse in their exit interviews, which took place with Juvenito Avila himself.?

While we're still waiting to hear back from some of the 22 employees who are behind the blog (almost all of whom are female -- only one male signed the petition), Jezebel did speak with a few of them, who?regaled horrific stories of a power-hungry man who would lock himself in an office with young women and try to kiss them or ask for massages. Daily attempted gropings are described, as is verbal abuse, like one girl who claims that Avila called her a "dirty slut" after showing up for work with a cold sore on her mouth.

Of the six former employees that Jezebel spoke with, only one is considering taking legal action against Juvenito Avila. The rest claim that they want other servers suffering from the same abuse to know that they're not alone. "We want to start a dialog with other women in the industry so they know that they can come forward, too," one woman explained. "Just because lines get blurred doesn't mean it's ever okay to experience harassment in the workplace."?

Visualized Samsung's human, Galaxy Notepowered taxi

That's the last time we take a taxi in Berlin. After a fairly harrowing journey across the city to tonight's Samsung IFA event, we reached our destination and spotted a clearly superior mode of transportation: a fleet of pedal-powered cabs sporting Galaxy Note 10.1s in the back. Of course, we probably would have spent more time admiring the glory that is Berlin, rather than the 10-inch screen, but it's nice tp have the option there when we need it.

Security at Paralympics lighter but still tight

LONDON (AP) ? The no-fly zone has shrunk and the missiles have been put to bed, but security around London's upcoming Paralympic Games will still be tight.

Britain's defense ministry said about 3,500 military personnel will be available for venue security duties, if needed, compared with 12,200 during the Summer Olympics.

Police numbers will also be trimmed to around 7,000 officers on duty during the Paralympics, Scotland Yard's national Olympic security coordinator Chris Allison said Tuesday.

"There is a difference between this operation and the Olympic operation and that is scale," Allison told reporters.

Fighter jets put on standby to intercept threats during the Olympics have returned to normal duties, but the HMS Ocean ? the largest ship in the Royal Navy's fleet ? will remain berthed in south London to act as a helicopter landing site and logistics base.

Troops have removed surface-to-air missiles installed at six sites around the capital as part of the vast security operation for the July 27-Aug. 12 Olympics, while a wide no-fly zone over east London has been scaled back dramatically. The Civil Aviation Authority said aircraft would now be restricted only from small areas around the Olympics Park, the athletes' village and the Eton Dorney rowing venue in west London.

Security was razor-sharp for the Olympics and officials were relieved it went off without any major security issues.

Britain was America's closest ally in Afghanistan and Iraq, making it a prime target of Islamic terror groups. And dozens of recent terror plots, including the 2006 one to blow up nearly a dozen trans-Atlantic airliners, have been hatched within Britain's sizeable Muslim population, more than 1 million of whom have ties to Pakistan.

Police anticipate that the terror threat level during the Paralympics is "substantial" ? meaning a terrorist attack is a strong possibility, Allison said. It is a notch below severe, the level Britain has been at for much of the time since the 2005 suicide bombings when 52 people were killed in attacks on London's transit network.

"We're still obviously prepared for threats to these games, but I think it's fair to say that there is a different degree of risk," said a British security official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press.

But the Paralympics present unique problems. Security personnel will have to inspect many of the athletes' specialist equipment, such as wheelchairs or prosthetics, for contraband.

Police and London organizing officials say they are confident guards are prepared for the challenge, and that all participants and visitors will be searched as thoroughly as during the Olympics.

"Our security staff have been trained to deal with the slightly different profile (of people) at the Paralympics," Paul Deighton, the London organizing committee's chief executive, told reporters.

G4S, the private contractor in charge of Olympic and Paralympic security, said it will be able to supply the needed personnel for the upcoming games.

The military had to step in at the last minute before the Olympics when the company admitted it would have a staffing shortfall at the Olympics.

G4S will provide some 5,000 staff to guard the Paralympic games with airport-like security checks.

"We take the task seriously and we're approaching it much the same way as we did the Olympic Games," said Adam Mynott, a G4S spokesman. "Although it's a smaller operation and the scope is smaller, it's still a large sporting event and we don't anticipate any issues."

Meet The Galaxy Note II, Samsung?s Most Important Phone Yet

noteThe original Samsung Note was huge -- in both physical size and popularity. Samsung sold over 10 million units of the huge phone, or rather, if you prefer, mini tablet. The Note II is more of the same, really. It sports a much more capable mobile SoC, which should make the Jelly Bean Android build run as smooth as, well, butter. Strangely, the new model features a lower resolution screen than the original, but that likely won't hurt sales. In all, the new Note is like the old Note. Engadget likes what they see so far. That's a good thing. It's still a massive thing, likely too big for some users. But that's fine with Samsung. The Note II shows Samsung's swagger. It might not be the best selling phone in Samsung's lineup, but it's the most important.

3-D Printing Revolution Stymied For Now by High Prices

A product developer aims to develop a 3-D printer that would help to push the price to consumers down to about $1,000 in the near future

printing press, gutenberg press, 3-D printing This printer caused a bit of a revolution in its day, too. Image: Flickr/aplumb

Three-D printers have the potential to spark a revolution of creativity and self-sufficiency.

It looks like this: you use your last drywall anchor in the middle of a shelving project and, instead of running to the hardware store, you turn on the printer. You design a nightlight in the shape of your child?s favorite animal and you turn on the printer. You need a spare house key and you turn on the printer. It?s going to happen, but there?s one big thing holding us back. Today, a decent 3-D printer costs at least $1,500.

A price tag alone can delay a revolution.

Two reasons caused regular computer printers to catch on?a development that took more than thirty years: The cost went down far enough that most could afford to buy one and printing shops opened up for those who couldn?t. The same changes are already starting to occur in the world of 3-D printing.

Bringing down prices
This month, Matt Strong, a product developer in Pleasant Grove, Utah, started a campaign on Kickstarter to build and sell a clone of the MakerBot Replicator, one of the most popular 3-D printers on the market for hobbyists. He?s altering the design a bit here and there and renaming it the TangiBot, but the biggest change is the price. He wants to sell his machine for nearly a third less money than MakerBot.

The Replicator?s design is licensed as open-source hardware and it?s available for anyone to see and use. ?All the data was there in some form, but I had to go through and clean it up and verify the materials,? says Strong.

The main thing he wanted to do was find a cheaper way to produce it, namely by setting up an assembly line in China.

Critics have accused Strong of working against the spirit of open source by trying to resell a product without contributing anything to its design. However, Strong says that he is applying creativity where it is most needed?in the printer?s manufacturing.

?The way something is assembled is absolutely additive. That?s how prices come down,? he says. ?A lot of people want to see the project taken down. I?m not going to do that.?

Strong has caused some alarm in the open-source community (though MakerBot itself has maintained a diplomatic silence). So far, he has reached less than 10 percent of his funding goal on Kickstarter. But even if his project fails, he has loudly declared that the MakerBot could be manufactured for less, and it?s only a matter of time before someone does it.

A lesson from history

Such a development could very well push the price down to about $1,000 in the near future, which is the same amount you would have paid for Hewlett Packard?s first personal DeskJet in 1988. At that price, HP was able to sell enough printers to awaken a whole new market and from there on out prices plummeted. Those who still could not afford to buy a printer benefited from a relatively new service. By the nineties, Kinko?s copy stores were selling printouts by the page.

This trend is just emerging with 3-D printing. A passerby looking through the window into Diane?s Mail Room, a shipping provider in Buckley, Wash., can see the 3D Touch, a $4,000 double-headed 3-D printer, next to the laser printers and inkjets.

?We?re probably the most innovative mailbox store you?ve ever seen,? says owner Ted Griffiths. ?We?re probably the only retail store in America that?s got one.?

Can Curiosity Mars mission inspire like Apollo?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Neil Armstrong inspired millions with his moonwalk. Can a feisty robotic rover exploring Mars do the same for another generation? With manned missions beyond the International Space Station on hold, the spotlight has turned on machines.

While it did not rise to Armstrong's "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," interest was so high in the rover Curiosity's "seven minutes of terror" approach to the red planet earlier this month that NASA's website crashed after receiving nearly 2 billion hits. The rover last week beamed home photographs of its first wheel tracks on the Martian soil since its daredevil landing

"There's something exciting about reaching another place in the solar system. If you think about the kind of interest the landing of Curiosity had, you get a sense of that," said Smithsonian Institution space curator Roger Launius. It wasn't on the same level as Armstrong's feat, "but it was pretty darn exciting," he said.

When Armstrong, then fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin, stepped on the moon on July 20, 1969, an estimated 600 million people watched and listened. "Virtually the entire world took that memorable journey with us," recalled Buzz Aldrin after Armstrong's death Saturday.

Early in the Space Age, the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts were the public face of NASA's space endeavor while the unmanned lunar missions that paved the way were in the shadows. The public craved adventure and the manned missions delivered. Aiming for the moon was new and exciting ? not to mention dangerous ? and the U.S. was locked in a Cold War space race with the Soviets.

Next, the space shuttle ferried a new crop of astronauts to low-Earth orbit, but after three decades of service, it became routine. And the Cold War thawed with the Russians and Americans cooperating on the Russian space station Mir and the International Space Station.

With the space shuttle fleet retired, the space station is all that's left. Its crew of six for the most part quietly goes about doing its job about 250 miles above the Earth. President Barack Obama nixed plans for returning astronauts to the moon in favor of landing on an asteroid and eventually Mars.

These days, space exploration is carried out by robotic spacecraft ? commanded by human handlers on Earth. Advances in technology have allowed unmanned spacecraft to go farther and peer deeper, with craft circling Mercury, Saturn, asteroid Vesta and others headed for Jupiter and dwarf planet Pluto. The twin Voyager craft are still going strong at the fringes of the solar system 35 years after their launch in 1977.

American University space policy analyst Howard McCurdy said today's generation of explorers was raised on technology and tends to get more jazzed about delivering a car-size rover to Mars.

"Robotic exploration has taken more of a center stage," he said. "It gets more publicity now than the International Space Station."

When the first Mars rover Sojourner landed in 1997, science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke rephrased Armstrong's famous line and said the event was "one small step for the rover."

Three other rovers have followed including Curiosity, which landed Aug. 5 by executing an intricate routine that ended with it being lowered by cables to the surface. Curiosity's acrobatics proved so popular that its Twitter followers surged from 120,000 the eve of landing to more than a million (the tweets are being written by the public affairs office at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the $2.5 billion mission.)

Curiosity chief scientist John Grotzinger said Monday the wheel prints on Mars may turn out to be an iconic image just like those first boot prints on the lunar surface.

"Instead of a human, it's a robot pretty much doing the same thing," he said.

Henry Lambright, a professor of public policy and space scholar at Syracuse University, said while Curiosity is inspiring, the world still needs to send humans beyond low-Earth orbit.

"It can't inspire to the degree that Apollo did because a robot can't inspire the way a man can," Lambright said.

On Monday, NASA played a recording from Administrator Charles Bolden that had been sent up to the rover on Mars and relayed back to Earth. In it, he thanked scientists and engineers for their achievement.

David Lavery of NASA headquarters said the hope is that someone will be inspired by Bolden's message and become the first human to stand on Mars.

"Like the great Neil Armstrong, they'll be able to speak aloud ? the first person at that point, of the next giant leap in human exploration," he said.

Logitech teases new Ultimate Ears lineup, says it's bringing 'Power to the Music' on August 29th

Having most recently introduced products like its water-friendly K310 washable keyboard and that TV Cam HD, Logitech's now apparently prepping a fresh Ultimate Ears portfolio for all sound lovers out there. Via its UE page on Zuck's social network, the company's teasing a plethora of products with some rather suppressive shots that don't quite tell us what's on the other end, though we can slightly see new headphones and speakers will be the focus of the main 'Power to the Music' event in a couple of days -- or August 29th, to be exact. For now, it looks like we'll have to keep wondering, but you can get a better hint for what to expect by tapping on the Facebook link below.

Samsung shares drop $12 billion after Apple's court victory

By Miyoung KimPosted 2012/08/27 at 10:54 am EDT

SEOUL, Aug. 27, 2012 (Reuters) ? Samsung Electronics shares slumped 7.5 percent on Monday, wiping more than $12 billion off the South Korean giant's market value, as a sweeping victory for Apple Inc in a U.S. patent lawsuit raised concerns about its smartphone business - its biggest cash cow.

An outdoor billboard advertising Samsung Electronics is seen in Seoul August 27, 2012. Samsung Electronics shares tumbled more than 7 percent on Monday, wiping $12 billion off the South Korean giant's market value, as Apple Inc's sweeping legal victory in their U.S. patent battle raised concerns about its smartphone business - its biggest cash cow. REUTERS/Lee Jae-Won

Samsung, which says it will contest the verdict, was ordered to pay $1.05 billion in damages after a California jury found it had copied critical features of the hugely popular iPhone and iPad and could face an outright sales ban on key products.

"There are still too many variables including the final ruling to come at least a month from the recent verdict, and whether there will be a sales ban on Samsung's main sellers such as the Galaxy S3," said a fund manager at a Korean asset management company that was one of the biggest institutional holders of Samsung's stock as of end-March.

Shares in Samsung - the world's biggest technology firm by revenue - tumbled as much as 8 percent, its biggest daily percentage drop in nearly four years, to 1.173 million won ($1,000), before closing at 1.180 million won. The broader Seoul market fell 0.1 percent.

Trading volume was also heavy, with a total of 1.27 million Samsung shares changing hands, around four times the daily average it saw last week and the stock's biggest daily volume since October 2008.

In the most closely watched patent trial in years, the jury at a federal court in San Jose, California, just miles from Apple's headquarters, found that Samsung infringed on six of seven Apple patents.

The verdict, which surprised many analysts with its speed - coming after less than three days of deliberations - and the extent of Apple's victory, will likely solidify the U.S. firm's dominance of the exploding mobile computing market.

Apple's triumph was also seen as a blow to Google, whose Android software powers the Samsung products that were found to infringe on Apple patents.

But it could help Microsoft, which has been struggling to win ground with its rival Windows mobile operating system. Shares in Microsoft's handset partner Nokia jumped 6 percent in early trade on Monday.

Analysts estimate Samsung's earnings will be reduced by 4 percent this year due to increased patent-related provisioning.

"Samsung should be OK - it means a 4-5 percent hit to the bottom line," said a Hong Kong-based hedge fund manager who declined to be identified.

"Both companies are in the midst of a squabble but I don't think it's a structural negative for Samsung. At the end of the day, as Forbes reported recently, Samsung has 65,000 patents versus 9,000 for Apple. Furthermore, Apple relies on Samsung for the processing brains of their phones. I sold Samsung four months ago but am watching the stock closely now."

The court case had weighed on Samsung's stock in the week leading up to Friday's verdict, but even after Monday's slide it remains up around 75 percent over the last 12 months, during which time galloping smartphone sales have powered record profits.

The phone and tablet business now accounts for around 70 percent of earnings for Samsung, which made a net profit of $4.5 billion in the April-June quarter.

EYES ON GALAXY S III

Apple plans to file for a sales injunction against Samsung, its lawyers said, and the judge in the case set a hearing date for September 20. Samsung, in turn, said the verdict "is not the final word in this case".

Top executives at Samsung, led by Vice Chairman Choi Gee-sung and head of its mobile division JK Shin, held an emergency meeting on Sunday.

The biggest concern for Samsung remains whether its latest flagship product the Galaxy S III, which was not included in the case, will also be targeted by Apple. The model is Samsung's best selling smartphone, with sales topping 10 million since its late May debut.

But Samsung's skill as a "fast executioner" - quick to match others' innovations - would likely mean tweaked, non-patent infringing devices would be on the market soon after any ban came into place, Morgan Stanley analysts said in a note.

"Outcomes of patent cases as well as their direct commercial effects are hard to gauge and often take time to resolve," said another Hong Kong hedge fund manager who focuses on South Korea. "For now, I would be neutral until better clarity or cheaper levels."

Samsung was disappointed by the verdict and plans to keep up the legal fight to have its claims accepted, according to an internal memo sent to its employees and released to the media.

"We've sought to settle this through negotiations, as Apple is our customer but had no choice but to counter sue," the memo said. "History has shown there has yet to be a company that has won the hearts and minds of consumers and achieved continuous growth when its primary means to competition has been the outright abuse of patent law, not the pursuit of innovation." ($1 = 1134.05 Korean won)

Pets or ? well, you know ? | Good Faith Ranch

While I have always wanted horses, I managed to avoid keeping any animal in the ?livestock? category until I turned 50 and decided to get a trio of laying hens. Not realizing, of course, that chickens are ?gateway livestock.?

Within five years? time, I went from three slightly used chickens to 15 hard-working young layers. From a single raised-bed planter to plans for more than a dozen of them. From my childhood Breyer horses to three real ones. And, of course, from a quarter-acre suburban lot to Rancho Buena Fe?.

Coming next: Goats.

Nigerian dwarf goats, to be specific. Small, friendly and productive, with milk for cheese, butter and soap.

I mentioned on Facebook that I was getting goats, and publicly and privately I started getting word of goats who need homes. Farm sanctuary goats. Shelter goats. Mixed breed and meat goats. Because everyone assumes I?m looking for pets. Which I?m not, not really.

The only animals on this place who get a pass are the dogs and cats, and honestly, they contribute plenty in the way of emotional support and endless amusement. Everyone else (except for Bernadette The Weather Duck? and her companion, ABBA) contribute food, in one way or another. As for me, I bring in the mortgage money and I handle all the care. The rest of the animals:

  • The horses get ridden.
  • The chickens give eggs.
  • The goats give milk.

The gardens provide food for me (and for sale/barter, eventually) with leftovers for the chickens, goats and compost pile. The compost pile gives back to the gardens.

But then, there?s the subject of meat. While I eat less and less meat over time (I?m becoming a ?Fork Over Knives? person, and the meat I do eat is largely raised here or purchased from sources I trust)? my dogs and cats are carnivores, and they?re fed that way. I have two massive freezers in the garage, and I?ll soon be adding another to accommodate serving as a drop site for SF Raw Feeders, a spectacular buying co-op that supports humane, sustainable, regional animal agriculture ? small family farms and ranches.

When I first got those three chickens, back in suburbia, I mentioned to my very sweet neighbors (two sisters who share a home) that I would have extra eggs, if they wanted them. One of them said, ?No, thank you. We?re vegans.? After a little probing whether it was a choice for health or because eating animals was unthinkable, I got that it the latter. So I said, ?You know, these eggs come naturally from chickens who live their lives to the best that any chicken could.?

?Oh no,? said the neighbor. ?We could never kill fetal chickens.?

?I don?t have a rooster,? I said. ?You?re not killing anything.?

They insisted you didn?t need a rooster to make more chickens. At that point, I let the matter drop. I just didn?t have the patience to explain high-school biology to them.

And I certainly didn?t have it to explain why feeding the leftovers of industrial animal agriculture to their dogs and cats (in a bad of kibble) negated pretty much everything they believed.

Which brings me back to meat.

I do not need to squeeze every last dime from my animals, which is why those who give a lifetime of eggs (hens), or milk (goats), or service (horses) will live out their lives here even when they no longer contribute. Beyond that, only the horses are guaranteed to never be fed to something else here at RBF. One of my dogs has killed a chicken or two, and when that happened, the unlucky hen is eviscerated, plucked and put into the freezer. She will later become dog food, fed back to the same dog who killed her. That wasn?t my plan for her, but I?m also not going to waste her final contribution by throwing her body into the trash. (Chickens who are sick I kill swiftly and mercifully, but they DO go in the trash ? I won?t feed sick animals to other animals ? which is more than you can say about a pet-food company.)

But chickens are not that hard to deal with emotionally, at least not for me. I can slaughter them, I can butcher them and since I made that leap, I stopped naming them. The two ducks ? Bernadette and ABBA ? are pets. The chickens are not, although there is always the possibility that one or two of them might become so, names and all. But as I said, barring accident or illness, the laying hens will live out their natural lives after they are no longer productive. The meats birds I?ll be raising next spring will not be. While they?ll be well-cared-for every day of their lives here, they will be raised to end up in my freezer, a few months after they come here. And I?m OK with that, too. The same goes with cockerels: We eat them here.

Pets or meat, we get to make the choice. That?s why I have a pet duck who I got after a field-training sessions ? once in which most of the other ducks died. I have no problem with death. I have a problem with cruelty.

And I really have a problem with people who cringe when I talk about killing poultry for the dogs or the table if they?re buying meat someone else killed after the animals were treated with less compassion than shown to your average end table. (I feel the same way about people who whinge about how ?cruel? hunters are, also while eating factory-farmed meat.)

With the goatly additions, though, I have to do some more thinking. That?s because (for those of you unfamiliar with the concept, such as people who believe in immaculate insemination of chickens) to milk from a goat (or any mammal) you need to breed them. The milk, after all, is intended to be given to offspring, not moochers like us.

While industrial dairies would do what industrial hatcheries do with male offspring if they thought they should get away with it (note: if you have a gentle heart, don?t look it up), what to do with males when you?re someone like me is a very big issue indeed. While the female offspring of a productive dairy goat is not problem to sell, there are not many ?pet? homes for neutered male goats, known as wethers. Then what? Goat meat is very good, but I know I couldn?t personally slaughter and butcher a goat I?d seen born. And I?m only barely able to cope with the idea of having someone else do the dirty work.

Yes, it?s the cute factor, I admit it. I don?t ever plan to have meat rabbits, pigs, cattle (even nifty small ones like Dexters) or sheep. If I can?t find homes for the inevitable wethers or deal with having them butchered for my freezer, next to the chickens I?ve killed myself or the meat I bought from SF Raw ? well, I?ll have no milk, just a goat pet.

And that, I don?t want, and can?t have.

The first wether, the boy goat I?m hoping to buy gave birth to a couple months ago, is staying, because goats can?t be kept as singles. He?ll be a pet to me and a companion for his mother. But that?s all the boy goats there?ll be here, one way or the other.

Image: The dairy goat I?m negotiating to buy now. Well-trained and well-mannered, an excellent producer of top-quality milk.

Christina Aguilera Sports Baseball Bat And LBD In 'Your Body' Shoot

Christina Aguilera was spotted on the set of her "Your Body" music video looking feisty and hot. Xtina was photographed in a long pink wig with blunt bangs, hot pink heels and a body-hugging dress.

Her look in the video certainly matches the Max Martin-produced track's sexy vibe, on which she belts "I am a freak, I'm disturbed/ So come on and give me your worst/ We're moving faster than slow/ If you don't know where to go/ I'll finish off on my own." In her hot little black dress, Aguilera was swinging a baseball bat around, and also driving around in a baby pink pickup truck.

In some of the shots she's chatting with a model-looking guy, but it's hard to tell if he's the video's love interest or just someone associated on the production end. She previously shot some of the video on August 20 when she tweeted out a photo of her leg in fishnet stockings. Her foot, in the hot pink shoe, rests on a green suitcase.

"Your Body" is the lead single off Aguilera's next record, her first since 2010's Bionic. For it, she's rumored to have hit the studio with a number of producers, writers and artists including British production team Xenomania, who have worked with Cher, Kylie Minogue and the Wanted, as well as her "The Voice" co-judge Cee Lo Green.

She has yet to confirm when the album will drop, but did explain to Rolling Stone earlier this summer that it shows her evolution. "I'm one that likes to collaborate. I love feeding off the creative energy, and it only makes me better," she said. "I'm on a continual path both personally and professionally. All-around, it's my goal to better myself as a person and an artist, and the show is one of those contributing factors and the guys are great friends at this point. It's fun collaborating with them at this point."

What do you think of Christina's style in the photo? Let us know in the comments!

Pastor's Corner : Right This Minute

Pastor's Corner : Right This Minute

Right This Minute

I have a computer on my desk, and an iPhone in my pocket.? We have WiFi in the rectory, and high-speed broadband internet connectivity.? Our communications technology is fast. I frequently order from Amazon.com, things I used to write on a list for the next time I could drive to the store. ?Often they arrive at my door the next day; I am disappointed if I have to wait both days of the two-day shipping.? I send out emails every morning, and chafe if I have not had a response by lunch.? I send text messages to people from whom I want to find out something right then.? My plans are frustrated if I have not had an answer in fifteen minutes.? So you see, sometimes I suffer from Instant Syndrome. Our expectations have been set by the instant technology that links us to one another, and to the producers, vendors, communicators, and commentators of our society.? We tap our fingers impatiently if we have to stare at the spinning color wheel on our screen for more than a second.? We go out of our minds if our request, operation, or order is not completed immediately; something is not working as it should. What is the problem? Is the technology not up to speed?? Then it must be fixed. But what if the technology is working?? Then the problem must be?.with the people!? Some people are not up to speed some of the time.? Some people are not up to speed at any time.? People are not instant.? But is that a problem? Our instantaneous technologies have transferred our expectations for instant communication and placed them on the people with whom we are communicating.? But do you know what?? That is not the way people work.? People have lives.? Lives are complex.? Complexity requires consideration, balance, and compromise.? None of these things disposes the average person to present an instant response to most communications from most people under most circumstances.? Electronic communication deprives us of any information about the person we are dealing with, except for what we expect from them.? We do not know if they are sick, or changing the baby, or running for their lives from a wild beast.? We only know that they aren?t meeting our expectations.? We are quick to transfer blame to them.? Blame leads to anger.? Anger is a symptom of Instant Syndrome. Don?t be angry.? Don?t have instant expectations for anything but instant technology.? People are not the problem ? they are the reason we communicate in the first place.? Don?t let Instant Syndrome describe your relations with people; none of the best relationships are instant. ?Real people, and real relationships, require time ? your time.? Delfina Castro, our business manager, is in El Salvador for three weeks to help her sick sister.? She paid the bills, and set up payroll to come out on schedule.? Other than that, folks just have to ? wait.? You would be surprised at the responses that elicits.? There must be some way I can get what I want, when I want it, because I want it! We have great technology here in the rectory; fast technology. ?We also have some really terrific, helpful, generous people. ?Just not very many ? you?d be amazed how much is done by so few. ?So it may take some time before we can respond to any request.? How much time may depend on things that you do not know as much about as you know about your own expectations. The best stuff we have for you is what we have had since Jesus gave it to His Church two thousand years ago. ?And freely giving some of our own time to Him is the best cure I know for Instant Syndrome.
