Fossil raindrop impressions imply greenhouse gases loaded early atmosphere

Thursday, March 29, 2012

In ancient Earth history, the sun burned as much as 30 percent dimmer than it does now. Theoretically that should have encased the planet in ice, but there is geologic evidence for rivers and ocean sediments between 2 billion and 4 billion years ago.

Scientists have speculated that temperatures warm enough to maintain liquid water were the result of a much thicker atmosphere, high concentrations of greenhouse gases or a combination of the two.

Now University of Washington researchers, using evidence from fossilized raindrop impressions from 2.7 billion years ago to deduce atmospheric pressure at the time, have demonstrated that an abundance of greenhouse gases most likely caused the warm temperatures.

Their work, which has implications for the search for life on other planets, is published March 28 in Nature.

"Because the sun was so much fainter back then, if the atmosphere was the same as it is today the Earth should have been frozen," said lead author Sanjoy Som, a postdoctoral researcher at NASA's Ames Research Center, Mountain View, Calif., who conducted the research as part of his UW doctoral work in Earth and space sciences.

He and his coauthors ? David Catling and Roger Buick of UW Earth and space sciences; Jelte Harnmeijer, a UW graduate now at the Edinburgh Centre for Low Carbon Innovation in Scotland; and Peter Polivka, a UW graduate student in civil engineering ? set out to determine how the ancient atmosphere differed from that of today.

Knowing the atmospheric pressure of a given period can help scientists understand in better detail the overall nature of the atmosphere at that time. For example, substantially higher pressure would be needed for a phenomenon called "pressure broadening," which allows existing greenhouse gases to absorb more radiation and warm the planet. That has been speculated as a reason for the warmer conditions on ancient Earth.

But precise measurements of atmospheric pressure date only from the invention of the barometer in 1644. The new work allowed the scientists to determine limits of ancient air pressure by comparing raindrop impressions from today with the fossilized impressions from a time when there were no plants or animals on Earth but the planet was teeming with microbes.

The sizes of raindrop impressions depend on raindrop velocity, the atmospheric pressure and the composition of material into which the raindrops fall. Previous research has shown that at Earth's surface raindrops won't exceed a little more than a one-quarter inch in diameter. That also is the largest a raindrop could have been to create the largest fossilized impressions, regardless of the atmospheric pressure.

Those large raindrops in today's atmosphere fall at about 30 feet per second, but if the ancient atmosphere was thicker that speed would have been lower and the maximum size of imprints left behind would be smaller.

Buick and Harnmeijer poured latex over the raindrop impressions in fossilized volcanic ash found in South Africa, then returned the latex peels to Seattle, where high-precision laser scanning produced detailed measurements.

Meanwhile, to get a measure of raindrop impressions under present-day atmospheric pressure, Som and Polivka used a pipette to release varying sizes of water drops down an open stairwell into recent volcanic ash collected from Hawaii and Iceland, held in a tray nearly 90 feet below. The ash was of similar composition to the rock in which the fossilized raindrop imprints were found. The scientists used liquid plastic and hair spray to harden the impressions, which then were scanned with lasers and the scans compared to the impressions from South Africa.

In comparing the raindrop impressions, Som determined that, if the biggest imprints were formed by the largest raindrops, the atmospheric pressure 2.7 billion years ago could have been no more than twice what it is today. But the largest possible raindrops are extremely rare, he said, so it is very likely that the pressure was the same, or even lower, than it is today. That would favor a buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to explain a warmer Earth, rather than the effect of pressure broadening.

Som, who earned a master's degree in aeronautics and astronautics before switching his emphasis to Earth and space sciences in the UW's astrobiology program, said the finding could prove important in the search for life on planets orbiting other stars, called exoplanets. That's because the Earth of 2.7 billion years ago was very different from what we know today, and yet it too supported abundant life in the form of microbes.

"Setting limits on atmospheric pressure is the first step towards understanding what the atmospheric composition was then. Knowing this will double the known data points that we have for comparison to exoplanets that might support life," he said.

"Today's Earth and the ancient Earth are like two different planets," he said.

So what happens when you buy a stock and it gets delisted from NASDAQ like Spansion I didnt buy it. Do you just lose your investment When it gets delisted it is an OTC stock right Also lets say you bought it when it s an OTC and they go back up to were they were. No delisting as a single event is not equivalent to liquidation. Yes it would normally trade OTC pink sheets unless it was taken private. If taken private before delisting your broker would receive payment in exchange for your shares and you would get the cash at clearing. If after delisting you would have to fill out the exchange paperwork yourself and mail in the share to get payment. If it is not taken private or liquidated bankruptcy it could theoretically be relisted if things changes and it refiles for listing.

What is StockHow do you buy StockIs buying Stock a good investmentIs buying Stock from a Popular Music Group a good idea.

You should do some research because there is no way that all this could be answered in this space. Very very basically stock is partial ownership in a company. Every company issues their stock through investment banks X number of shares. Ownership is determined by what percentage of these shares you own. You can buy stock through a stock broker either in your community or even on line. Stock is only as good as the company that is issuing it. Companies go bankrupt all the time and when this happens stock holders loose their investment.

Good Luck.

With the stock markets all down would it actually be a good time to invest in mutual funds.

The answer is different depending on your personal investment profile. If you are under 30 like me and have enough cash and access to a decent amount of emergency reserves it is a great time if you are willing to incur the risk which I am. Therefore I will be adding to my stock investments in mutual funds after seing them drop dramatically in just the last month. However if you are closre to like 55 or aproaching your planned retirement age in general you may want to consider if you can wait out another 40 to recover in 30 because nobody knows for sure that it will not happen stocks always carry a certain level of risk.

You may be tempted to react to another drop by selling at an even lower price so try to gauge your true tolerance for risk or better discipline yourself to swings like by ignoring the markets and having someone taht will always remind you for your goals. Lastly if you do not have access to an emrgency cash fund you may want to start there first. And if you want to start a family and your spouse wants to get a house then mutual funds may also have to wait until you have some extra savings for mortgage payments as another emergency fund.

Why it's important that your mechanic fully inspect your vehicle at ...

Matt here, from Fenski Automotive Center in Sugar Hill, GA. We are your expert automotive consultants. You always hear me talk about how having your vehicle maintained and properly inspected at regular intervals ensures that minor issues do not become major repairs. This vehicle that was towed in the other day is a prime example.

Your vehicle should be properly inspected by a certified mechanic each time it?s in for service, including during routine services like oil changes and tire rotations. A reputable shop will have their industry-certified technicians perform these inspections free of charge. These senior technicians know what to look for and when a service or repair recommendation is needed. An honest shop will inspect your vehicle and consult with you about any items that need attention so that you, the customer, can make an informed decision about the services or repairs your vehicle needs.

Conversely, a mechanic that, with all good intention, tries to protect you from the cost of a repair or maintenance service by putting it off as long as possible or by not telling you about it, is not doing you any favors. In fact, this attitude may leave you broken down, stranded and with a hefty towing bill.

Something else to consider, is that a shop that does not provide full service and repair, like a quick lube for example, may only be inspecting items they repair or replace. Thereby leaving your vehicle?s other systems completely unchecked.

So be sure to take your vehicle to an honest, reputable, full-service shop that will provide a full vehicle inspection by an industry-certified senior technician at no cost and with no high-pressure sales on the recommended items. In doing so you will ensure that minor issues and pending repairs are caught early, preventing an unnecessary breakdown, towing expense and loss of use.

Happy motoring and have a great day!

(AP) ? Nnemkadi Ogwumike wants one final shot at an NCAA championship.

She would like nothing more than to carry her Cardinal to another Final Four, and she had 39 points and 10 rebounds in top-seeded Stanford's 76-60 victory over No. 5 seed South Carolina on Saturday night to get one win closer.

Now, Duke is all that stands in the way of a trip to Denver and the program's fifth straight Final Four.

Ogwumike shot 14 for 22 and made 11 of 12 free throws, and Toni Kokenis added 12 points and seven boards as the Cardinal (34-1) ran their school-record winning streak to 31 games with a hard-fought victory.

"I don't want any game to be my last, except for next weekend," she said. I play for my teammates. I play for my coaches. It's been one crazy journey. To be out there and know how bad teams want to beat us, that's motivation enough."

Markeshia Grant scored 14 points and made four 3-pointers and La'Keisha Sutton had 18 for scrappy South Carolina (25-10), which hung tough in its first regional semifinals since 2002 despite a significant height disadvantage.

Stanford will play Monday night against Duke, which beat St. John's 74-47 in Saturday's first game at the Save Mart Center. The Cardinal have a large contingent of fans who made the three-hour drive from the Bay Area.

"Nneka just would not be denied," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said.

The Hall of Fame coach topped her former U.S. Olympic star, Dawn Staley. The two captured a gold medal together in the 1996 Atlanta Games, with VanDerveer taking a year off from Stanford to coach the Americans.

But it wasn't as easy as Stanford usually has it ? South Carolina's guards regularly answered on the offensive end after baskets by Stanford. The Cardinal received their biggest push since a 74-71 overtime victory over rival California at home in Maples Pavilion on Jan. 28.

"I thought we played as well as we could play considering who we were playing and the type of night Nneka Ogwumike said," Staley said. "My hat goes off to our players who fought so hard and gave all they had."

Nneka Ogwumike took over down the stretch, even playing with three fouls for the final 17:20.

She scored on a leaping layin off a reverse pivot with 9:23 left to put her team up 56-48. She hit one free throw with 8:54 to play, then drew a charge on Ashley Bruner moments later before scoring over Bruner for an 11-point lead of 59-48. Staley quickly called timeout.

South Carolina tried to mix it up defensively against Ogwumike to get her out of sync.

"Looking at the stat sheet it doesn't look like anything worked," Staley said. "She had a tremendous night. We made her work for every 39 of her points. When someone has it going on like that there's not much you can do but give her different looks."

Kokenis had a steal in the backcourt and drove the full length of the floor for a three-point play with 5:10 remaining to make it 68-54 and cap a 9-0 Stanford run.

Joslyn Tinkle banked in a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to end the first half with Stanford leading 36-30 despite getting points from only four players. Nneka Ogwumike shot 7 for 12, while the rest of the team went 7 of 20.

The Cardinal got a couple of scares with Chiney Ogwumike going down twice. She hit the ground awkwardly on her braced right knee on a first-half rebound attempt. She was undercut by South Carolina's Courtney Newton, but the sophomore stayed in the game after being helped up by her big sister.

With 15:11 remaining, she drove the lane was bumped by Ebony Wilson. She lay on the ground in pain, grabbing to stretch her troublesome right knee while holding her sister's hand. Chiney Ogwumike sat down and iced the knee before returning less than a minute later.

"They were relentless inside. They outrebounded us, which isn't very common. It's something we'll have to watch tape about," Nneka Ogwumike said. "I knew in my heart we were going to win. I could see it in our eyes."

The talented Ogwumike sister tandem combined to score their team's first 10 points and the Cardinal led by as many as 10 in the first half.

South Carolina advanced to the NCAA's round of 16 for the third time in program history and first under fourth-year coach Staley. And this group looked drastically different from the Gamecocks team that took a 70-32 whipping on Stanford's home floor in Maples Pavilion on Nov. 26, 2010. That day, Staley asked VanDerveer to spend a few minutes with the South Carolina players in the locker room after the Hall of Famer earned career victory No. 797.

The Gamecocks beat six ranked opponents this season but couldn't pull off the upset this time.

"I think we were a resilient group just coming in four years ago from our 10-18 season to the Sweet Sixteen," Sutton said. "I definitely feel this is something special at the University of South Carolina. I definitely think we'll be back every year from now on."

VanDerveer eliminated Staley from the NCAA tournament again. The Cardinal beat Staley during her college career at Virginia in the NCAA semifinals in both 1990 and '92, and Stanford went on to win it all both times. But VanDerveer's teams haven't captured a title since '92.

Likely WNBA No. 1 pick Nneka Ogwumike hopes to do her part to change that.

"Whoever has the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, they're going to get a nice solid player who's going to help them right away," Staley said.

'Bed-of-nails' breast implant deters cancer cells

ScienceDaily (Mar. 23, 2012) ? Researchers at Brown University have created an implant that appears to deter breast cancer cell regrowth. Made from a common federally approved polymer, the implant is the first to be modified at the nanoscale in a way that causes a reduction in the blood-vessel architecture that breast cancer tumors depend upon, while also attracting healthy breast cells.

Results are published in Nanotechnology.

One in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer. Of those, many will undergo surgery to remove the tumor and will require some kind of breast reconstruction afterward, often involving implants. Cancer is an elusive target, though, and malignant cells return for as many as one-fifth of women originally diagnosed, according to the American Cancer Society.

Would it be possible to engineer implant materials that might drive down that rate of relapse? Brown University biomedical scientists report some promising advances. The team has created an implant with a "bed-of-nails" surface at the nanoscale (dimensions one-billionth of a meter, or 1/50,000th the width of a human hair) that deters cancer cells from dwelling and thriving. Made out of a common federally approved polymer, the implant is the first of its kind, based on a review of the literature, with modifications at the nanoscale that cause a reduction in the blood-vessel architecture on which breast cancer tumors depend -- while also attracting healthy breast cells.

"We've created an (implant) surface with features that can at least decrease (cancerous) cell functions without having to use chemotherapeutics, radiation, or other processes to kill cancer cells," said Thomas Webster, associate professor of engineering and the corresponding author on the paper in Nanotechnology. "It's a surface that's hospitable to healthy breast cells and less so for cancerous breast cells."

Webster and his lab have been modifying various implant surfaces to promote the regeneration of bone, cartilage, skin, and other cells. In this work, he and Lijuan Zhang, a fourth-year graduate student in chemistry, sought to reshape an implant that could be used in breast reconstruction surgery that would not only attract healthy cells but also repel any lingering breast-cancer cells. The duo created a cast on a glass plate using 23-nanometer-diameter polystyrene beads and polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA), a biodegradable polymer approved by the FDA and used widely in clinical settings, such as stitches. The result: An implant whose surface was covered with adjoining, 23-nanometer-high pimples. The pair also created PLGA implant surfaces with 300-nanometer and 400-nanometer peaks for comparison.

In lab tests after one day, the 23-nanometer-peak surfaces showed a 15-percent decrease in the production of a protein (VEGF) upon which endothelial breast-cancer cells depend, compared to an implant surface with no surface modification. The 23-nanometer surface showed greater reduction in VEGF concentration when compared to the 300-nanometer and 400-nanometer-modified implants as well.

It's unclear why the 23-nanoneter surface appears to work best at deterring breast-cancer cells. Webster thinks it may have to do something with the stiffness of malignant breast cells. When they come into contact with the bumpy surface, they are unable to fully wrap themselves around the rounded contours, depriving them of the ability to ingest the life-sustaining nutrients that permeate the surface.

"This is like a bed-of-nails surface to them," Webster said.

"I would guess that surface peaks less than 23 nanometers would be even better," Webster added, although polystyrene beads with such dimensions don't yet exist. "The more you can push up that cancerous cell, the more you keep it from interacting with the surface."

The pair also found that the 23-nanometer semispherical surface yielded 15 percent more healthy endothelial breast cells compared to normal surface after one day of lab tests.

Webster and Zhang next plan to investigate why the nanomodified surfaces deter malignant breast cells, to create surface features that yield greater results, and to determine whether other materials can be used.

The National Institutes of Health's National Center for Research Resources and the Hermann Foundation funded the research. Michael Platek at the University of Rhode Island helped with the electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis.

Breathing Smog in Pregnancy Linked to Child's ... - Health News

By Kathleen Doheny
HealthDay Reporter

THURSDAY, March 22 (HealthDay News) ? Women exposed to higher levels of certain air pollutants while pregnant are more likely to have children with anxiety, depression and attention problems by ages 6 and 7, new research suggests.

?This study provides new evidence that prenatal exposure to air pollution at levels encountered in New York City can adversely affect child behavior,? said Frederica Perera, a professor of environmental health sciences and director of the Columbia Center for Children?s Environmental Health at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.

She led the new study, published online March 22 in Environmental Health Perspectives.

The researchers looked at pollutants known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). They are created by the burning of fossil fuels and are common in urban environments. Traffic emissions are a major source of these pollutants.

The study is believed to be the first to link behavior problems in school-age children with two measures of prenatal PAH exposure: air concentrations and a PAH-specific marker found in mothers? blood samples and umbilical cord blood. The PAH, inhaled by the mom during pregnancy, can cross the placenta, experts know.

Perera?s team followed the children of 253 inner-city women who gave birth between 1999 and 2006. None of the mothers smoked.

The researchers measured the concentrations of PAH in the environment of the mothers for 48 hours during trimester two or three. They also took blood samples from the mothers and the umbilical cords.

In addition, the women answered questions about their children?s behavior, including describing any attention problems, anxiety or depression. The attention problems would not qualify as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, Perera noted.

The investigators found a link between higher PAH exposure levels and behavior problems. ?Symptoms of anxiety and depression were 45 percent higher in the higher exposure group versus the lower,? Perera said. Attention problems were 28 percent greater in the higher PAH exposure group.

When the researchers took into account other sources of pollutants such as tobacco smoke and diet, the link remained. However, although the study found an association between prenatal PAH exposure and childhood behavior problems, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

The level of problems were those that could result in referral to a doctor for further evaluation, Perera noted.

Several mechanisms could explain the link, she said. Oxidative stress is one. Or, the chemicals may be ?endocrine disrupters, which are capable of affecting the normal signaling that occurs in early brain development.?

Perera plans to follow the children until they are age 12.

?The study by itself is not convincing to me,? said Dr. Victor Klein, an obstetrician-gynecologist who specializes in high-risk pregnancies and is director of patient safety and risk reduction at North Shore-LIJ Health System in Great Neck, N.Y. He reviewed the study and said that ?further research has to be done.?

Meanwhile, Klein said, it?s ?common sense? to try to keep your environment as pollution-free as possible, especially when pregnant. However, that can be easier said than done. He tells women to exercise, watch their diet and get good prenatal care.

Another expert, Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Children?s Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park, wondered if the study would apply to pregnant women living outside New York City. ?On one hand, I don?t think people will be surprised that pollution poses a potential risk,? he said. ?What is striking here is they have been able to document and quantify it.?

The broader message, Adesman said, is the need for society to clean up the air and to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

Perera said that to reduce exposure to pollutants, pregnant women should not smoke and should ask others not to smoke in their homes and offices. When cooking, she said, ventilate with a fan. Avoid other toxic chemicals such as pesticides. And, in addition, eat a healthy diet full of antioxidant-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, she advised.
