Judges review a complaint by Japan during the Artistic Gymnastic men's team final at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Monday, July 30, 2012, in London. Britain was initially announced as the silver medalist but Japan questioned the score of three-time world champion Kohei Uchimura on pommel horse, the team's very last routine. About five minutes later, Uchimura's score was revised and Japan was awarded the silver while Britain was bumped down to bronze. (AP Photo/Julie Jacobson)

LONDON (AP) ? Chen Yibing couldn't quite help himself. He needed to gloat. A little at least.

When asked how a team that looked like a bit of a hot mess ? at least by its lofty standards ? in men's gymnastics during qualifying on Saturday could turn it around so suddenly and win a second straight Olympic gold so convincingly on Monday night, Yibing smiled and smacked his hands together.

"Perfect!" he said in English.

Maybe not, but then again, perfection was hardly required. Not with expected contenders Japan and the United States finding interesting ways to let gold slip from their grasp.

The Japanese needed a little help from the judges to earn silver. The U.S., so spectacular during qualifying, faded to fifth.

The only team besides China that seemed capable of rising to the occasion was Britain ? yes, Britain ? which earned its first team medal in a century by grabbing bronze.

It felt like something considerably shinier to the host nation, which had been pointing toward this meet from the moment London was awarded the games seven years ago.

The last time the Brits had medaled in the team competition came in 1912, when they earned bronze a few months after the Titanic sunk.

"The beauty of what we've got is that this team isn't a one-hit wonder," said Britain's Louis Smith, the team captain and unquestioned leader.

Considering a British gymnast has won the last six junior European championships, Smith's not kidding.

Still, while the Brits have closed the gap between themselves and the rest of the sport's elite, one thing remains clear. Nobody beats China when Olympic gold is on the line.

Nobody.

Sure, China hardly looked like its normal efficient self as it bumbled through qualifying on Saturday. It hardly mattered on Monday. Qualifying is just practice to the Chinese, something to pass the time. The finals are what counts, and no country does it better when it matters most than the one that has now won three of the last four Olympic titles.

Were the Chinese bothered by their abysmal performance in qualifying? Maybe a little. And no, they weren't sandbagging. At least they claim they weren't.

"This is not a smoke because if that's the way then that would not be serious," Zou Kai said. "We did want to make it to the finals."

That was never really in question. Neither was China's second straight Olympic title. Their total of 275.997 well clear of the field.

The uncharacteristic miscues that marred their preliminary round, when they finished sixth, they vanished. The Chinese were their typical steadily spectacular selves.

It's what they do. It's what they've seemingly always done.

"Our coach and our fellow colleagues created a history," Yibing said. "In the future we will have more new rising stars."

Who's going to argue? Though the 27-year-old Yibing is unlikely to be around when the games head to Rio de Janeiro in 2016, there's another crop right behind him.

Whoever inherits the mantle from Yibing and company will have to find a way to deal with an increasingly unstable landscape. The Japanese squeaked out silver when judges adjusted three-time defending world all-around champion Kohei Uchimura's score on pommel horse, providing the 0.7-point boost necessary to hold off Britain.

The judges ruled upon review that Uchimura should receive credit for his dismount, providing his score with the points necessary to keep the Japanese on the medal stand.

Barely. And Japan failed to overcome their rivals. Again.

"We practiced just like we thought but this is the Olympics and this is a special environment and we really couldn't do as we planned," Uchimura said. "It was really difficult."

Maybe, but not really to the home team. The Brits ? with Prince William and Harry cheering them on and Union Jacks in full sail throughout the O2 Arena ? leaned on Smith early then relied on their own rising stars to climb into third and cement themselves as an emerging power in a sport long considered an afterthought.

"It's a beautiful day for the sport of British gymnastics," Smith said.

Not so much for the Americans.

The U.S. had touted this group as their deepest in more than a generation, a team capable of winning gold for the first time since the boycotted Los Angeles games in 1984.

The Americans certainly looked capable during qualifying, posting the top score and performing with such confidence veteran Jon Horton joked afterward if the U.S. could just get its gold from the finals and save everyone a lot of time.

The answer, of course, was no. And the U.S. saw its hopes of a medal of any shade evaporate immediately. Sam Mikulak wobbled on floor exercise. Danell Leyva and John Orozco bobbled on pommel horse. And the U.S. spent the second half of the meet futilely trying to make up lost ground.

Though the Americans rallied from last to fifth, it was of small consolation.

"There's nothing we could have really done differently," Mikulak said. "We're a young team. We've never experienced anything like this before."

True. Leyva and Jake Dalton are 20. Mikulak and Orozco are 19. They will be around for awhile.

Then again, so will the Brits. While this probably marked the final games for the 23-year-old Smith, youngsters Sam Oldham and Max Whitlock are 19. The junior ranks are packed with precocious talent that no longer views the chance to compete on a world stage as something of a pipe dream.

"The juniors we've got coming through, there's so much depth," Smith said. "Now everyone is going to be more motivated than ever."

So are the Chinese. The names change but the results seemingly never do. They have ruled the sport for the past decade, winning every major international team competition since 2005.

The streak will end someday. Just not yet. Yes, the Brits are better than they've ever been. True, the Japanese have the best gymnast in the world.

They're just not the best team. Again.

"Our rivals are still the same one," China's Zhang Chenglong said. "We still keep a very cool mind."

The Chinese always do.

The iPhone Is The New Doctor's Housecall | mac-talks.com

New trends show health-related apps are changing how patients experience healthcare.

Health related iOS apps are proliferating quickly in the App Store. While the most popular health related apps tend to be focused on diet, exercise, and stress relief, there are some other fast growing trends that show how the iPhone and iPad transforming the healthcare experience for consumers.

According to MobiHealthNews, which provides an annual assessment of the market for mobile apps related to medicine, health, and fitness, three new trends are emerging that could significantly reshape our experience of healthcare.

In its annual study, MobiHealthNews notes that most apps fall into one of 12 general categories (as noted in the chart above) with apps that support cardio-related fitness, diet and meal planning, stress reduction, strength and weight training, and women?s health being the five most common categories.

This year, however, the health news service notes that there is significant growth in areas that it hadn?t identified as distinct categories until now. Its current category chart will likely have to be redesigned to include three new and growing types of consumer health apps: allergy information and management apps, interactive apps for specific doctor?s offices or healthcare groups, and physical therapy apps.

Allergy management is considered a new app category because the majority of apps related to allergies have been launched in the past ten months. The emerging category is largely dedicated to seasonal allergies rather than to most serious types of allergies like those to shell-fish, various types of nuts, and bees ? all of which can be fatal. MobiHealthNews notes that some of these apps have become highly ranked in the App Store. The interesting trend here is that there are multiple allergy management apps produced by pharmaceutical companies, which while providing useful information, can also serve as marketing vehicles for specific drugs. Given that iOS devices in general, and the iPad in particular, deliver a better marketing punch than other types of ads, that could impact how allergy sufferers evaluate treatment options.

The second trend is apps by established health care providers like individual doctor or provider practices, medical groups, hospitals, and insurance carriers. Many healthcare professionals and facilities are embracing consumer-oriented apps as ways to distribute provider information and general health references. Some are also offering direct interaction for things like scheduling appointments and paying bills. A handful even offer the ability to interact with doctors, nurses, or other providers directly through the app. It?s not really surprising to see such a contingent of apps proliferate as many businesses in healthcare and other industries are developing consumer-facing apps. Most major pharmacies already have iOS apps, for example.

The third trend is physical therapy apps. Most of these apps are focused on specific injuries, conditions, and areas of the body. Many provide reference guides to help patients with at home exercises and MobiHealthNews expects to see doctors and physical therapists ?prescribe? these apps.

Ultimately, the message for consumers and healthcare professionals alike is these new growth areas all focus on educating and empowering patients to take more control of their health and healthcare needs. That?s a positive impact for individuals so long as they turn to reputable apps. It is worth noting that accuracy and potentially biased information are big concerns cited by physicians about medical and health apps in general.

NASA to athletic Mars rover: 'Stick the landing'

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? NASA's most ambitious and expensive Mars mission begins this weekend with the arrival of the smartest rover ever built.

Like an Olympic gymnast, the rover must "stick the landing."

It won't be easy. The touchdown for the rover called Curiosity is so risky it's been described as "seven minutes of terror." That's the time it takes to slow down from a blazing 13,000 mph to a complete stop with the help of a parachute, heat shield and rockets.

In a new twist, the rover will be lowered by cables from a hovering spacecraft.

Scientists on Earth won't know for 14 minutes whether Curiosity safely landed Sunday night.

If all goes well, Curiosity will spend two years trying to figure out if the Mars environment was once suitable for microbes.

(AP) ? The Syrian regime accused regional powerhouses Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey of trying to destroy the country and vowed Sunday that it would defeat rebels who have captured large swathes of the commercial hub Aleppo.

Military forces in Aleppo fired tank and artillery shells at neighborhoods as rebels tried to repel the government air and ground assault. According to activists, rebels who launched an operation to take over Syria's largest city a week ago are estimated to control between a third and a half of Aleppo's neighborhoods.

Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, on a visit to Iran, leveled some rare public criticism of Sunni powers in the Middle East, saying Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are supporting a plot hatched by Israel to destroy Syria. The three countries have all been backing rebels trying to overthrow authoritarian President Bashar Assad.

"Israel is the mastermind of all in this crisis," Moallem told a joint news conference in Tehran with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi . "They (Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey) are fighting in the same front."

The battle for Aleppo, once a bastion of support for Assad's regime, is critical for both the regime and the opposition. Its fall would be a major blow to Assad, giving the opposition a major strategic victory with a new stronghold in the north.

"They mobilized all their armed terrorists and tried to capture Damascus in less than a week," Moallem said. "They were defeated. Today, they've gone to Aleppo and definitely they will be defeated in Aleppo," he added. The rebels mounted a challenge to the regime in Damascus before the assault on Aleppo, but after a week of intense clashes, they were defeated.

Iran, Syria's only remaining ally in the Middle East, has provided Assad's government with military and political backing for years, and has kept up its strong support for the regime since the uprising began in March 2011.

Sunday's bombardment was part of a government counter-offensive to retake control of districts that had fallen into rebel hands last week at the beginning of their bid to capture Aleppo.

Activists said the shelling was most intense in the southwestern neighborhoods of Salaheddine, Bustan al-Qasr and parts of Saif al-Dawla, some of the first areas seized by the rebels when they started the push last week after being routed in a similar attack against the capital Damascus.

"Life in Aleppo has become unbearable. I'm in my car and I'm leaving right now," said a Syrian opposition writer who was fleeing the city Sunday. "There's shelling night and day, every day," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

The writer and other activists from Aleppo said economic conditions had become dire in the city.

"Bread, gasoline and gas are being sold on the black market at very high prices," he said. "Many things are in shortage."

State-run news agency SANA said security agents were hunting down armed groups in several areas of Aleppo including Salaheddine, inflicting heavy losses upon the "terrorists" ? the term authorities use to describe the rebels.

SANA quoted an Aleppo official as saying troops would continue until the city is "purged" of armed groups and peace and tranquility is restored.

Syrian Interior Minister Mohammad al-Shaar vowed late Saturday that the Syrian army would root out terrorism and restore order to Syria. Al-Shaar was making his first televised appearance since he was wounded in the July 18 bomb attack in Damascus that killed four other top security leaders in Assad's inner circle.

Al-Shaar's arm was bandaged, but he said he was back at his job with "greater determination."

Mohammad Saeed, an Aleppo-based activist, said Sunday's shelling was some of the heaviest seen yet.

"But the rebels are still holding up well," he said. "No ground troops have been able to enter. They are shelling from outside." He said rebels were fighting back against the attackers.

He said around 200 fighters entered the city Sunday to join about 1,000 fighters who had poured into the city in the past few days to take on the Syrian army, which had been massing forces around the city ahead of the bombardment.

He also said rebels have received "a new batch of weapons and ammunition," but declined to say from where.

An amateur video posted online by activists showed flames and black smoke billowing from a building in the Bustan al-Qasr district of Aleppo.

Another video showed rebels celebrating the seizure of a tank in the town of al-Bab in Aleppo countryside. Dozens of rebels, some waving Kalashnikov rifles, sat atop the tank as it drove through al-Bab, while residents shouted "Allahu Akbar" and motorists honked their horns in celebration.

The Britain-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported heavy fighting and explosions in Aleppo. It reported intense clashes in the Bab al-Hadeed, al-Zahraa and al-Arqoub neighborhoods.

The international community has raised an outcry about a possible massacre in this city of 3 million but acknowledged there was little they could do to stop the bloodshed. The foreign minister of Russia, a powerful ally of Syria, said over the weekend it was "simply unrealistic" for Damascus to cede control of Aleppo.

Since the rebel assault on Aleppo began a week ago, about 162 people have been killed, mostly civilians, according to the Observatory. Some 19,000 people have been killed since the uprising began, the group says.

The violence has sent refugees flooding into neighboring countries including Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Lebanon.

Jordan said it had opened its first tent camp for Syrians, saying a surge of refugees forced it to do so.

Authorities had been reluctant to set up the camps, possibly to avoid angering Assad's regime by concentrating images of civilians fleeing his military onslaught.

But with 142,000 Syrians refugees and their numbers growing daily by up to 2,000, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said Sunday that Jordan had no other choice. He spoke at the camp's opening ceremony in the hamlet of Zataari, about 11 kilometers (7 miles) from the northern border with Syria.

India Furious Over Olympics Gatecrasher

The mystery of a woman who marched alongside India's athletes during Friday's opening ceremony of the Olympic Games has been cleared up, although India is still angry about the breach of protocol.

The woman was one of the volunteers who had been part of the cast of the show and became "over-excited", according to Lord Coe, the London 2012 chairman.

Wearing a red shirt and blue trousers, she was a stark contrast to the traditional blazers and Rajasthani yellow turbans and sarees of India's team.

She took the entire lap of the stadium alongside flag-bearer Sushil Kumar during the athletes' parade, smiling and waving as she went.

Lord Coe said: "She shouldn't have been on the parade and we will look into that... the next time we have an opening ceremony."

India's chef de mission P K Muralidharan Raja said they had taken "strong exception" to the woman's actions.

He added: "She had no business to walk in with the Indian contingent and we are taking up the issue with the organisers.

"We don't know who she is and why she was allowed to walk in. It is a shame that she was with the athletes in the march past.

"The march past is for the athletes and officials attached to the contingent. We are totally taken by surprise how a person could just intrude into the track."

India has complained to the London Olympic Games Organising Committee (Locog) over the apparent security lapse, which is also seen as a huge insult to the nation.

The young woman, who appeared to be Indian or of Indian origin, had no visible accreditation, raising questions as to how she came to be there and why she was not stopped by security.

The incident also intensifies resentment already felt at what India sees as inadequate TV coverage of the team's march past in the stadium.

A total of 40 Indian athletes and 11 officials dressed in traditional blazers and Rajasthani yellow turbans or yellow sarees marched in the Opening Ceremony, earning one of the biggest cheers of the evening.

But Mr Raja was furious at both the coverage of the team and the mystery woman.

He said: "The Indian contingent was shown for hardly 10 seconds in the television coverage and the entire focus sadly was on this lady, instead of the athletes."

Imagine Toys Review ~ Shopping Cart Dash ? Huppie Mama

By Carrie Wells, Ed.D.

I love early learning board games, and Shopping Cart Dash?available at Imagine Toys is no exception! It is a similar game to Pesky Pirates, which I reviewed last month.

This game incorporates several skills, including identifying certain types of food, sorting food by category (e.g. fruits, veggies, meats), turn-taking, counting, making purchases, and understanding the relationship between icons and their corresponding words. It is played similarly to a Trivial Pursuit game, in that you must collect one item of each color to win. Each color on the board corresponds to a color on a shopping list each player gets at the beginning of the game. ?Each player also selects a different colored shopping cart and begins at the starting line. Players take turns rolling the die and moving the correct number of spaces. If the shopping cart lands on a color that corresponds to an item the player needs for his/her cart, then that player can use the coins distributed at the beginning of the game to pay for that item. Game play ends when one player has filled his/her cart with all the items on the shopping list.

Since we received this game (it?s probably been almost 2 months now), Lydia asks to play it with either my husband or her grandmother almost daily. I usually ask that she wait until her brother goes to sleep (since he?s just 10 months old and can easily choke on the smaller pieces). This game is a great way to introduce so many important early learning concepts in a fun, engaging game that kids will love!

?BUY IT!?Shopping Cart Dash?is on sale now at?Imagine Toys?for just $12.97.

You can also learn more about Imagine Toys by following on twitter and ?like?ing on Facebook.

Move Over Meteor: Derby Is The Other High Speed Node.js Framework In Town

Nodejs_logo_lightAlthough the company behind Meteor, a framework for building real-time JavaScript applications in vein of Google Docs, just announced a nice big $11.2 million round of funding, it's not the only game in town. In my story earlier this week I mentioned Mojito, a framework developed by Yahoo. But there's still another framework that has escaped my attention, even though it's around longer than Meteor: Derby.

Louisville Real Estate Trends | Jennifer Morgan

Louisville Real Estate Trends

The National Association of Home Builders reports that remodeling of kitchen and baths is booming.? Based on a current survey, home remodeling has experienced a?huge?increase over 2010. Bathroom remodeling jobs have an edge over kitchen remodeling projects maybe because the price of a kitchen remodel is usually greater than a bathroom remodel.
?
The trend of increased home remodeling may be related to many factors. Two possibilities are:
?
Homeowners are choosing to stay in their houses longer.? This choice indicates that instead of moving, homeowners are electing to remain in their current house, remodel it and appreciate it.
There have been many reports of a lack of housing inventory in recent months.?We have seen?housing inventory remaiings very tight all through the state and at levels severely below normal market conditions. This is attributed to many homeowners being under water and being able to sell until prices rise.? Louisvile real estate trends are becoming very clear. It is a fantastic time for you to buy a home ? but there needs to be a home on the market to buy!

Homeowners are discovering ? or it is being suggested to them ? that they update the look of their home prior to putting it on the market.? Increasingly more home sellers are updating their house to help it compete in the real estate market.?This is yet another?of the Louisville?real estate trends and?could imply more than just "home staging".? It could imply that replacing old-style construction components will help in the sale of the home.? Purchasers are searching for that sleek, updated look.?

Phytoestrogen Effects On Breast Cancer Recurrence | Dr. Margileth

Discover how phytoestrogen in products such as soy affects breast cancer recurrence rates.

Breast Cancer Answers Ask A Question

Breast Cancer Answers PDF

David A. Margileth, M.D.:?In Soy foodstuffs there are what is called phytoestrogens which are very weak estrogens.? There has always been a question of or a dilemma of whether taking such products may be estrogen-like and increase the risk of recurrence of breast cancer.? I think the most current data would indicate that it probably does not.

So that taking modest amounts of soy products is okay but taking very large amounts I guess I have to say we don?t have any clearcut data but the amount of soy that most people would take probably is totally appropriate and would not increase the risk of breast cancer recurrence.

CE-Oh no he didn't!: Valve's Gabe Newell says 'Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone'

CE-Oh no he didn't!: Valve's Gabe Newell says 'Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone'

Always-outspoken Gabe Newell, the big cheese at Valve, made quite a few interesting statements at this year's Casual Connect conference, including the quote above. Gabe believes Microsoft's impending update will drive manufacturers away from the OS and he reiterated Valve's plan to make the entire Steam catalog available on Linux as a "hedging strategy." During the onstage discussion, he also weighed in on the longevity of touch input, which he estimates at a decade, the possibility of tongue control and the future of wearable computers. Other classic quotes include "the next version of Photoshop should look like a free-to-play game," which Adobe apparently didn't quite understand -- and frankly, neither do we.

There Is No Sovereign Debt Crisis

For a high-unemployment country with low borrowing costs?such as, say, the United States?the sensible idea right now is the old-fashioned, liberal one: public works. If there are useful projects to be undertaken and idle workers who could be undertaking them, then borrow money and conduct the projects. Spending on certain types of public works today?accelerated repairs of water and transportation infrastructure, say, or rapid construction of durable military equipment?should save money in the long run. As money becomes cheaper, more projects pass cost-benefit scrutiny. A ?bridge to nowhere? is a tragic waste if it diverts resources from other useful undertakings. If it can be financed at negative real rates and built by construction workers who?d otherwise be unemployed or languishing in positions that don?t take advantage of their skills, it may be a reasonable investment.

Zahav Introduces 10-Course Tasting Menu By Michael Solomonov ...

We have a soft spot in our hearts here at Phoodie for Zahav and all things Solomonov, so it is with happiness that we bring you this news: Beginning September 1st, Zahav will debut The Kitchen Counter, ?a four-seat marble counter overlooking his kitchen where guests can watch the chefs prepare a 10-course menu of ambitious, innovative plates every Friday and Saturday night.?

The counter will accept only one seating per night, at 7:30PM, and each weekend will have new food and drink offerings so no one meal is the same. The cost? For $90 per person, guests can enjoy Solomonov?s personally cooked Four Bells-quality cuisine, with an optional $50 cocktail/wine pairing. Here?s how to get a seat at the counter:

Guests who are interested in reserving a seat at The Kitchen Counter should email counter[at]zahavrestaurant.[dot]com at noon on the first of the month for the following month (i.e. guests hoping for weekends in September should email 8/1). Requests must include the preferred date to dine and number of guests (two or four). The restaurant will contact all interested parties on a first-come, first-served basis to book all the month?s seats. Anyone submitting a request will receive a response within 48 hours.

Guests who secure a reservation will be asked at that time about dietary restrictions, and will also be required to pay for the meal in advance with a credit card. Any cancellations 72 hours in advance of the dinner and earlier will be refunded with a Zahav gift card in the amount of the dinner; cancellations within 72 hours of the reservation will forfeit the cost.?

Got it? Good. So maybe draft that email now and hold on until noon on the 1st to hit send. You wouldn?t want to miss out on the chance for one of the city?s best chefs to personally cook you a meal right? Right?

Healthy San Francisco And Transgender Procedures: Resolution Would Change City's Universal Health Care Code

This article comes to us courtesy of SF Weekly's The Snitch.

By Jeff Sandstoe

Healthy San Francisco, the city's attempt at universal healthcare, has helped many local residents who don't have health insurance receive affordable medical treatment. But who is hasn't helped entirely are San Francisco's transgender residents seeking certain medical procedures, such as gender reassignment surgery.

But as Justice John Roberts proved last month -- times are a changin'.

Supervisor Scott Wiener is hoping his colleagues today will continue that change and support his resolution urging the Department of Public Health to withdraw exclusions in the healthcare system and allow members of the transgender community receive procedures that currently are only allocated for non-transgender people.

"This is a glaring inequity in the system," Wiener told SF Weekly. "In San Francisco, we value healthcare, but we also value treating people equally ... this is a way to do just that."

What exactly does this mean for the transgender community? Wiener explained that currently, a non-transgender female patient who needs a hysterectomy would be covered under Healthy SF, but a transgender female-to-male patient would not be -- and isn't that discrimination?

Currently, gender reassignment surgery is considered elective, however, as Wiener notes in his resolution, plenty of "studies have concluded that receiving medically necessary transition related treatment results in a dramatic drop in suicidality, an overall improvement in mental health, a reduction in HIV infection, a decline in substance abuse rates, and an increase in socioeconomic status for transgender people."

Wiener says that he worked with the DPH every step of the way in drafting the resolution and that the department is on board with his plan. It has received widespread support thus far so Wiener expects it will pass at the Bord of Supervisors meeting today with little debate.

And although a resolution won't make any changes to the law, it's definitely a good start for San Francisco.

NRG Energy to Buy GenOn in $1.7 Billion Stock Deal

NRG Energy said Sunday that it reached an agreement to buy wholesale power provider GenOn Energy in an all-stock deal worth about $1.7 billion.

Under terms of the deal, GenOn Energy[GEN? Loading...? ? ? () ? ] shareholders will get 0.1216 of a NRG Energy share for each of their GenOn shares. Based on NRG's Friday closing stock price, the offer equates to about $2.20 per GenOn share. That represents about an 18 percent premium over Houston-based GenOn's Friday closing stock price.

NRG [NRG? Loading...? ? ? () ? ], based in Princeton, N.J., sells power on the wholesale market and to retail customers in states that have deregulated their electric power industry. It said the acquisition will allow it to cut costs, while boosting efficiency and cash flow.

The utility industry is the least consolidated in the U.S. economy so the merger provides ?scale benefits," David Crane, NRG president and CEO, told CNBC?s ?Squawk Box? on Monday.

NRG expects the higher profits and lower costs stemming from the deal to increase its free cash flow by about $300 million per year.

?If you look at the relative size of the company, that?s just an enormous number in terms of shareholder value creation,? Crane said of the annual increase in free cash flow. Crane expects to see the full-year benefits of the merger starting in 2014.

NRG has been hurt by a long and steep decline in wholesale power prices. Prices have fallen because electricity demand has been soft in the sluggish economy and because the price of natural gas, which is used by many utilities to run generators, has fallen to its lowest level in years. Also, the mild winter across much of the country reduced demand for heating across the country and dented the profits of electric companies.

In May NRG posted a first-quarter loss of $209 million, or 92 cents per share. GenOn, which was formed through the combination of Mirant and RRI Energy in 2010, lost $32 million, or 4 cents per share in its first quarter.

NRG operates power plants that run on natural gas, coal, oil, nuclear, solar and wind energy. It is one of the biggest power companies in the country with 25,000 megawatts of generating capacity, with two million customers in 16 states.

GenOn has generating capacity of almost 23,000 megawatts, with facilities in a dozen states. It uses coal, natural gas and oil to generate electricity.

Once the deal closes NRG shareholders will own 71 percent of the combined company and GenOn shareholders will own 29 percent. Four members of GenOn's board will join NRG's board, with GenOn Chairman and CEO Edward Muller becoming the board's vice chairman.

The deal is subject to approval by the shareholders of both companies, as well as federal and state regulators. It's expected to close by the first quarter of next year, the companies said.

Also on Sunday, NRG said that it will pay its first common stock dividend. A dividend of 9 cents per share will be paid on Aug. 15 to shareholders of record as of Aug. 1.
