Is Aaradhya Bachchan the Suri Cruise of India?

It's safe to say Aaradhya Bachchan is the most famous seven month old in India. Born on November 16, 2011, Aaradhya's name was a well kept secret by parents Aishwarya and Abhishek and the rest of the Bachchan clan. That didn't stop the press, us included, from dedicating column inches and generating reams of headlines about her. We dubbed the littlest Bachchan, Beti B.

The tiny mite was shielded fiercely from the cameras that inevitably follow in her mother's wake. There was no photo-op when Aishwarya left Seven Hills Hospital to take her new born baby home. There were certainly no pictures released for public consumption, and only a select handful were allowed to meet the new addition to the family. Chief among them were American chat show queen Oprah Winfrey, who was one of the earliest visitors to the Bachchan household after Aaradhya's birth, and Shah Rukh Khan.

Very few details about the new baby were made known to us. We didn't know what her name was till just two months ago when grandfather Amitabh Bachchan confirmed it was Aaradhya on Twitter. We had no idea what she looked like till even more recently when a London resident bumped into Ash and baby, who were holidaying in the city, and revealed that the little miss had brown eyes, like papa.

Despite the Bachchans' golden silence, or perhaps because of it, it seems like we can't get enough of Aaradhya. Pictures of Ash carrying her then six month old daughter through Nice airport on her way to Cannes were devoured greedily online, as were subsequent photos of Ash and Aaradhya navigating Mumbai airport on their return. That not an inch of the baby's face was visible in the photos didn't seem to matter at all.

In Hollywood, celebrities take extreme public interest in their offspring for granted, and in their stride. Some, like Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez, sell the first photos of their children to tabloids for huge sums - though, admittedly, Angelina and her partner Brad Pitt donated every penny they received from pictures of daughter Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne to charity. Other celebrities, like Jessica Alba and Jennifer Garner, make no attempt to hide their little ones away from cameras, toting them around quite happily wherever they go.

And six year old Suri Cruise, daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, is possibly the most photographed and written about child in the world. Dressed in mini-couture by her mother, there are entire websites and blogs, as well as endless tabloid features, dedicated to Suri's designer wardrobe and to scrutinizing her every move.

Is public interest in Aaradhya Bachchan veering towards obsession, Suri style? It's early days yet, but certainly there's no similar curiosity about Shilpa Shetty's one month old son Viaan or Lara Dutta's five month old daughter Saira. And while it stands to reason that the world's most beautiful woman should expect some extreme prying, we can't think of another A-lister whose children have been put under the scanner in the same manner - not even Shah Rukh Khan, the superstar's superstar.

And what of Aaradhya's parents? They seem resigned to the fame that has been thrust upon their little daughter. Aishwarya was armed with a variety of implements with which to shield her baby's face from cameras at Nice airport. These included a red stole and a folder. Abhishek is circumspect. "Right now Aaradhya is the focus of everybody's attention. Everybody is fascinated with her. She is little and innocent and everybody wants to be with her, everyone wants to spend time with her," he says.

HBT: Phillies make Thome available to AL teams

Jim Thome is no longer able to play first base, so now that interleague play is over, he?s limited to pinch-hitting duties. The future Hall of Famer hasn?t fared too well in that role to date, going just 1-for-16 with one homer and 11 strikeouts, so the Phillies are now open to setting him free.

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com was told by American League clubs that the Phillies have made Thome available for trade to clubs that need a designated hitter. The veteran slugger would prefer to play for the White Sox or Twins, but there?s not a clear fit with either club right now.

While Thome served a lengthy stint on the disabled list this season due to a back injury, he recently showcased what he could do if given regular at-bats out of the DH spot by hitting .333 (12-for-36) with four homers, two doubles and 14 RBI over nine games during interleague play.

Thome is only making a modest $1.25 million this season, so he?d be a worthwhile gamble for a contender. The 41-year-old is currently tied with Sammy Sosa for seventh all-time with 609 career home runs.

SPIN METER: Candidates trade misquoting charges

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney can speak with authority when they complain about their words being taken out of context. They've not only been victims of the tactic, they've also used it to great effect themselves.

In an unforgiving election season, every sentence spoken by the candidates is sliced and diced by the opposition for political gain, and unflattering statistics are cherry-picked to pack the most devastating punch. The campaigns pounce on any ill-advised remark and cry foul when their own slip-ups get similar treatment.

The tussle over recent comments by Obama and Romney on the economy is a skirmish in which both sides have lobbed out-of-context complaints after snippets of their words were isolated and held up to ridicule.

Obama, at a news conference June 8, spoke six words that quickly came back to bite him: "The private sector is doing fine."

Romney's response boomeranged, too. Noting that the president had said the country needs more firefighters, police officers and teachers, Romney said the public thinks "it's time for us to cut back on government and help the American people."

Does Obama really think the private sector is doing fine?

Does Romney really want to slash firefighters, police and teachers?

Both campaigns went into overdrive, trying to turn their opponent's quotes into votes by quickly churning out mocking web videos and a barrage of caustic emails.

Romney said of Obama, "Is he really that out of touch?"

The Obama campaign repackaged Romney's remarks about public workers as "Mitt Romney's Job Elimination Plan."

No matter that both candidates quickly came back before the cameras to try to explain what they really meant.

Obama said he'd meant to highlight job growth in the private sector that was providing good economic momentum. Romney said it would be "completely absurd" to think he wants to cut police, firefighters and teachers.

Obama suggested there will be plenty more back-and-forthing in the context game.

"There will be no shortage of gaffes and controversies that keep both campaigns busy and give the press something to write about," he predicted. "You may have heard I recently made my own unique contribution to that process. It wasn't the first time. It won't be the last."

Already, 2012 is shaping up as a huge year on this count.

Taking quotes out of context "has been the dominant tactic of deception in the campaign," says Kathleen Hall Jamieson, author of "Dirty Politics: Deception, Distraction, and Democracy" and director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. "It has been used in the past, but not this extensively."

The center's flackcheck.org website calls out candidates and campaign groups for taking words and statistics out of context.

Jamieson says the thrashing that Obama took over his "private sector" remark amounts to a case of what goes around, comes around.

In 2008, Obama's campaign was merciless when Republican rival John McCain said during the midst of economic turmoil that "the fundamentals of the economy are strong."

McCain was right, and he was trying to serve as a voice of reassurance to Americans nervous about what might happen next. But Obama's campaign successfully turned the words into ads that painted the Republican as out of touch with the economic concerns of ordinary people.

"That repeatedly aired ad increased the likelihood that people thought that McCain wasn't competent to handle the economy, and that is dramatically out of context," Jamieson said. "McCain's statement was inarticulate, but appropriate."

Obama's camp has been equally aggressive at getting maximum mileage out some of Romney's cringe-worthy comments.

There was this: "I'm not concerned about the very poor."

And this: "Corporations are people."

And this: "I like being able to fire people."

Romney has explanations for them all. The firing remark, for example, had nothing to do with Romney's corporate past. It was his way of saying that consumers should be able to switch their health insurance if they're not getting good service from their current provider.

But many people will remember only the offending sound bites, recirculated by the candidate's critics.

Romney's campaign, in turn, pulled off its own blatant case of out-of-context advertising when it released a spot last November that had Obama stating, "If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose."

In fact, Obama was quoting McCain.

The full 2008 quote from Obama: "Sen. McCain's campaign actually said, and I quote, 'If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose.'"

Jamieson said the damage from out-of-context quotes goes beyond the misleading impressions that are cast, making candidates wary of speaking freely.

It also can be a distraction from the real issues that divide the candidates.

Obama and Romney do have fundamental differences over how to handle the U.S. economy, but that can get lost in the finger-pointing over who's misquoting whom.

Sandusky trial's second week turns to defense case

Jerry Sandusky gets out of his Attorney Karl Rominger's car, Sunday, June 17, 2012, in Lemont, Pa. After four days of testimony that saw eight men from 18 to 28 years old tell jurors that Sandusky sexually abused them as children, the former Penn State assistant football coach could take the stand in his own defense at his criminal trial, but it's not certain that will happen as trial resumes on Monday. FILE - In this June 11, 2012 file photo, former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky leaves the Centre County Courthouse after the first day of his trial in Bellefonte, Pa. He is accused of 52 counts of child sexual abuse involving 10 boys over a period of 15 years. After a gripping, emotionally laden four days of testimony that saw eight men from 18 to 28 years old tell jurors that Sandusky sexually abused them as children, the former Penn State assistant football coach will likely get to tell his side of the story this week. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar, File)

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) ? The defense in Jerry Sandusky's child sexual abuse trial could begin putting on its own witnesses early this week, and one of them could be the former Penn State assistant football coach himself.

Sandusky's lawyer suggested in opening statements that Sandusky, 68, may take the stand, although that is a risk that defense attorneys usually avoid.

It can be difficult for any defendant to hold up under the questions of a skilled cross-examiner, said David A. Harris, a University of Pittsburgh law professor.

"If they put him on, that's really a sign that they think they cannot succeed unless they put him on," Harris said. "Because it's a huge risk."

Jurors have already heard Sandusky deny the allegations, in the form of an audio recording of a stilted television interview Sandusky conducted shortly after his November arrest.

They also listened to 20 prosecution witnesses over four days, including eight men ages 18 to 28 years who said they were his victims when they were children.

In a large and crowded courtroom, with a crush of national media listening to their every word, the accusers recounted in detail their experiences. Their testimony forms the heart of the case the government is trying to prove, that Sandusky is a predatory pedophile, in the words of lead prosecutor Joe McGettigan.

The men said he plied them as children with gifts, dazzled them with the prestige of Penn State's vaunted football program and then scaled up physical contact from a hand on the knee or a fatherly kiss to fondling, repeated oral sex and in some cases violent anal rape.

Now they will hear the defendant's side and witnesses could begin testifying as early as Monday. Defense attorney Joseph Amendola's opening statement, court documents and four days of witness cross-examination provide something of a road map to a strategy aimed at creating enough doubt in jurors' minds to avoid a conviction that could send Sandusky to prison for life.

The defense has sought to show how the stories of accusers have changed over time, that they were prodded and coached by investigators and prosecutors, that some are motivated to lie by the hopes of a civil lawsuit jackpot, and to paint Sandusky's interactions with children as misunderstood and part of a lifelong effort to help them, not victimize them.

"Jerry, in my opinion, loves kids so much that he does things none of us would ever do," Amendola said at the start of the trial.

Lawyers pursuing a credibility defense try to give jurors reasons to disbelieve the narrative presented by prosecutors, and a financial gain motive or a changing story can be part of that, said Harris, the Pitt law professor.

"This is all standard procedure for building a reasonable doubt defense," said Harris, who has worked as a defense lawyer and prosecutor. "What they don't have here is any way to say, 'OK, these kids have been molested, but somebody else did it.'"

The first four days of testimony, however, may have already cast the die, if jurors have made up their minds about the credibility of the eight accusers, six without a father in their lives, three who have never known their fathers. That doesn't mean they can't be swayed by defense evidence, and the judge will caution them to keep an open mind, Harris said.

"But what we're talking about is human nature here, and people have heard a lot already," he said.

In a recent court filing, Sandusky's lawyers have asked the judge to allow them to put before jurors the out-of-court statements made by the former Penn State president Graham Spanier and Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, two university administrators who are fighting criminal charges they lied to the Sandusky grand jury and did not properly report suspected child abuse. If permitted, that could help Sandusky undercut the credibility of a witness who says he saw Sandusky sexually abusing a yet-unidentified boy in a team shower more than a decade ago. The judge has not ruled on the request.

The defense also wants Judge John Cleland to allow into evidence the entire contents of "Touched," Sandusky's autobiography, saying in a court motion that the entire book would "contextualize the quotes and avoid misleading characterizations," although so far prosecutors have used the book as a source of photos, not quotes.

On Friday, they won an effort to argue that letters and other alleged grooming by Sandusky were not an attempt to manipulate the boys so that he could molest them, but rather evidence of "histrionic personality disorder" on Sandusky's part.

During cross-examination, Amendola pressed the accusers for dates and locations, details of their involvement with the kids' charity Sandusky founded, arrests or drug problems, contacts they have had with Sandusky in the years since the alleged abuse ended and the terms of representation deals with civil lawyers. At least six said they told incorrect or incomplete stories in early contacts with police, and three testified that some of the details only came back to them in recent years.

In some cases, the witnesses said they were embarrassed or did not want to get dragged into the case, while others spoke of recent improvements in what they recall.

He questioned so-called Victim 1, whose case began the wider investigation, about whether he had ever told a neighbor he and his mother would get rich from a civil suit.

"No, I have dreamed about living in a big house, I have dreamed about driving nice cars," Victim 1 testified. "Doesn't everybody?"

The young man described as Victim 7 said his memory of the allegations has improved since he began counseling a year ago.

"Through counseling and through talking about different events and through talking about things in my past, different things have triggered different memories and I had different things come back," he testified. "It's changed a lot about what I can remember today and what I could remember before, because I had everything negative blocked out."

Jurors appear to be paying very close attention to the trial, which in its first week moved along more quickly than many observers have predicted, leaving the prosecution close to wrapping up its case in chief, something that could happen as early as Monday.

During jury selection Sandusky's lawyers asked potential jurors about ties to a list of people who might be witnesses, including members of coach Joe Paterno's family and Dottie Sandusky. It is unclear, however, which of them will take the stand.

Does Microsoft have a tablet up its sleeve?

6 hrs.

The big question for the past day on the Microsoft beat: What in the heck is the major, can?t-miss news that the company is promising to deliver on Monday?

Microsoft isn?t saying a word, despite endless attempts at arm-twisting from people like me. But overnight, a plausible answer emerged. The Wrap?quotes an unnamed source?saying that Microsoft will be unveiling its own tablet, based on the upcoming Windows 8 operating system, to take on the iPad. AllThingsD?reports that it?s hearing the same thing.

Mary Jo Foley?connects those reports to Microsoft?s Barnes & Noble partnership, and wonders if the real target might be Amazon?s Kindle Fire.

Whatever the case, it would be a huge break with tradition for the company.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal, but we are not privy to any additional product?information due to this relationship.)

Dating back to the very early days of the PC industry, Bill Gates and Paul Allen chose to stay out of the hardware business and instead supply the operating system and key applications for computers. It was the key strategic decision that led to Windows dominating the market for PC operating systems, in part because hardware companies knew that their OS vendor was a partner, not a competitor.

However, it wouldn?t be completely unprecedented for the company. Microsoft made an exception in the video-game business ? deciding that coming out with its own console, the Xbox, was the only way to effectively compete with the likes of Sony and Nintendo. And the strategy has largely worked.

With the rise of the iPad taking the steam out of sales of low-end Windows-based computers, it?s quite possible that Microsoft has decided to make a similar exception in the tablet market, assuming these latest reports are true.

Whether a Microsoft-branded tablet would be an?effective?competitor to the iPad or Kindle Fire is another question entirely, depending on a whole range of factors, from the quality of the experience to the price.

Stay tuned for more on Monday.

Canada warned of ?major shock? from Europe?s debt crisis

The Bank of Canada is warning that growing concern over European debt could severely crimp financial conditions around the world and hit Canada with a ?major shock? ? a warning that comes as infighting broke out among the euro zone players with the most power to keep the crisis from spreading out of control.

More Related to this Story

With a key Greek election Sunday just as G20 leaders arrive in Los Cabos, Mexico, for a two-day summit, the cohesive economic plans that markets are demanding seem unlikely to emerge in the coming few days.

In their semi-annual assessment of Canada?s financial system, Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney and his policy team outlined the damage that Europe?s worsening drama could do to the global recovery.

Specifically, they warned that more Canadian households could find themselves underwater with their debt payments if unemployment were to spike, and that banks and the wider economy could suffer through close ties to countries like the United States and the United Kingdom that have tighter links to Europe.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper will use next week?s G20 leaders summit to urge decisive action from Europe, a message he recently expressed during visits to London and Paris.

Canada will argue that its own focus on free-trade deals, labour-market reforms and more business-friendly regulations are an example to others of a growth agenda that doesn?t pile on new debt.

?The growing crisis in Europe will be the dominant concern in Los Cabos,? said Andrew MacDougall, the Prime Minister?s spokesman.

On Thursday, the two most influential powers in the euro zone ? Germany and France ? descended into public finger-pointing and are clearly at odds over the best way forward.

In a speech to Parliament, German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned against a growth agenda focused on new debt and replied to pressure directed toward her own country to do more.

?Yes, Germany is strong. Germany is Europe?s economic engine and stability anchor,? she said. ?But we also know that Germany?s strength is not infinite.?

Shortly after, French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault shot back. ?The situation in Europe is sufficiently critical not to give in to simplistic talk. We need to deal with things seriously and courageously,? Mr. Ayrault said.

G20 summits are designed with the hope that leaders can largely rubber-stamp plans that have been worked out in advance by finance ministers and government officials. Yet this summit is shaping up to be particularly chaotic.

The Mexican hosts are concerned by the timing of Sunday?s Greek election, which could easily come to dominate the two-day summit. After a May 6 vote failed to produce a governing coalition, Greeks must choose again among parties with varying views on the strict austerity plan Europe has imposed as the condition for a financial bailout.

Canada?s Finance Minister, Jim Flaherty, expressed concern about the vote?s timing earlier this week.

?The election is right on the eve of the G20 meeting,? he said. ?It could result in a disruptive moment if the Greek election were to result in a disassociation of Greece from the pact that our European colleagues have developed with respect to austerity.?

Regardless of what happens in Greece, the euro zone appears increasingly at odds internally over how to fix itself. That doesn?t bode well for hopes of a major breakthrough at the G20.

Germany, the largest economy in the euro zone, is increasingly isolated on two fronts. Its insistence on austerity as the way forward is now being challenged by some ? particularly France?s new Socialist President Fran?ois Hollande ? who favour shifting focus toward a growth agenda. Germany is also resisting calls for much deeper euro zone integration in the form of common euro bonds.

A central point of contention in Los Cabos will be the degree to which those outside Europe help out in the form of new pledges to the International Monetary Fund. Two months ago in Washington, the IMF said it had received more than $430-billion in new pledges for loans that could be used to rescue troubled states. Los Cabos is where the G20 nations are expected to confirm their specific individual pledges. Canada and the United States have said they won?t contribute.

Chris Brown-Drake Fight: All About Rihanna, Sparked By Middle Finger!

It looks like last night's wild fight between Chris Brown and Drake was, in fact, about the former's ex and the latter's rumored hookup, Rihanna. Imagine that.

Sources also indicate that while Drake's telling the truth when he says he wasn't involved physically in the epic melee that ensued, he definitely stirred the pot.

Drake gave Brown the middle finger, engaged in some serious trash talk, and recruited several other rappers to join his posse before the brawl, witnesses say.

Drake PhotographChris Brown Smiles

Tension started escalating, supposedly, when Drake gave the middle finger to one of Chris' bodyguards and shouted, "I'm about to go whoop that ass!"

Chris' entourage responded with a few hand gestures of their own.

Witnesses very close to the action say Drake felt disrespected ... even though he started the exchange. At that point the rapper went to get backup.

His boys Juelz Santana, Trav B and Meek Mill - the one who sources say hit Brown with a bottle and gashed his chin - then stepped into the beef.

At this point, the latest report says that Drake got loud and shouted at Chris something to the effect of "You be on that ho s**t on Twitter n***a!"

That would be an expletive-laden, but clear reference to a recent Twitter war between Chris, Drake, and Meek ... all over who's banging Rihanna.

Raise your hand if you're surprised she played some role in this. Anyone?

Moments later, Chris' security guards became irate, more words were exchanged, pushing and shoving began, a bottle was thrown, and ... yeah.

By all accounts, Drake never got physically involved in the brawl and was about to leave at the time, which he claimed in a statement via his rep.

His middle finger and smack talk clearly played a role in it, however.

One quick question before we turn it over to your comments: Whatever happened ... aren't you almost surprised this hasn't happened before?

Whose side are you on in the Chris Brown-Drake beef?

Gomez scores 2 to give Germany 2-1 win over Dutch

By NESHA STARCEVIC

KHARKIV, Ukraine (AP) -It wasn't even halftime and the German fans were already singing "Aufwiedersehen, aufwiedersehen."

It was a little premature to be saying goodbye, but the Germans still left the Netherlands on the brink of elimination from the European Championship after beating their historic rivals 2-1 Wednesday in one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament.

Mario Gomez scored both goals for Germany, which is now a perfect 2-0.

"We've taken a major step and opened the door to the quarterfinals," Germany coach Joachim Loew said. "Now we have our destiny in our own hands against Denmark."

Although Robin van Persie pulled one back for the Netherlands in the second half, the defeat leaves the 2010 World Cup runner-up dangerously close to going home.

"Early on we had decent chances but the German goals came out of nowhere," Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk said. "We defended badly. Our offense and defense did not connect.

"Germany really has an excellent team. It has power, creativity and scoring."

Germany, a three-time European champion, has six points from its two wins but is still not sure of advancing from Group B, where three teams could end up even. Earlier, Portugal beat Denmark 3-2.

The Netherlands, along with Germany considered one of the favorites but drawn into a tough group, now has lost both group games and needs to beat Portugal to have a hope. Germany will need only a draw against Denmark to win the group.

"The time just wouldn't pass, it remained standing (at the end of match)," said Gomez, who also scored the only goal in Germany's opening 1-0 win over Portugal. "They were pressing. It was close until the end but with Manuel Neuer in goal we can be a bit more relaxed.

"The expectations were great from our team even before the tournament and we've won six points against two classy teams, but it's a long way to the final."

Gomez put Germany ahead in the 24th minute after collecting a pass from Bastian Schweinsteiger at the edge of the penalty area and turning between two Dutch defenders, who were betting on an offside call. But Gregory van der Wiel failed to move forward quickly enough and Gomez had a simple task in slotting past Maarten Stekelenburg.

Stekelenburg made a stunning reflex save to stop Holger Badstuber's header from a free kick cross from Mesut Oezil from point-blank range in the 37th, but one minute later he was beaten again.

Gomez and Schweinsteiger outplayed the Dutch defense with two simple moves. Gomez passed to the ball to Schweinsteiger, who immediately played it into space for Gomez and the striker slotted inside the far post for his third goal of the tournament.

"We knew that they had problems in their central defense and that's where the goals came from," Loew said.

Gomez was expected to be only a backup for Miroslav Klose, but he has finally broken through in his third major tournament.

He went off in the 72nd minute and was replaced by Klose - but one minute later Van Persie finally found the target for the Dutch, driving home from the edge of the box in the 74th.

Despite a sweltering evening with the temperature at 29 degrees C (84 degrees F) at kickoff, both teams went into the match at high pace and Van Persie missed a couple of early chances.

"It was an intense game, very close. It was very difficult to play at a high pace in very hot weather," Loew said. "We managed to take their forwards mostly out of the game. We should have secured the win with a third goal in the second half. I felt they were tiring."

Gomez displayed clinical finishing when it mattered and the Dutch appeared shell-shocked as they went in for the halftime break.

By then, the German fans at the Metalist Stadium were already singing, "Aufwiedersehen, aufwiedersehen," - the bye-bye chant of scorn for the Dutch team and its orange-clad fans.

"The beginning was good but it was not good enough," said Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel, who had a poor game and was substituted at halftime. "We had imagined all of this very differently."

Matt Cain Inspires Our List Of 10 Musical Perfect Games

San Francisco Giants pitcher, the 22nd man to toss a perfect game, got us thinking about musical perfectos.
By James Montgomery

The San Fransisco Giants' Matt Cain
Photo:

On Wednesday night, San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain made baseball history — and totally helped my fantasy team — by tossing a perfect game against the Houston Astros.

For those who have no idea what that means, Cain faced the minimum of batters — 27 — and didn't allow a single base-runner. That means no walks, no hits, no anything over nine innings (with 14 strikeouts to boot). If that sounds impressive, well, it is: Only 22 pitchers have ever thrown a perfect game in the 143-year history of Major League Baseball, and somewhat surprisingly, the list of those who've accomplished the feat reads less like a who's who of MLB greats as it does a who's that?

For every Hall of Famer (Cy Young, Sandy Koufax, Catfish Hunter) to reach perfection, there are just as many pitchers who made history and then were history. I'm talking about the likes of Len Barker, Mike Witt and Charlie Robertson, each of whom were perfect for one glorious game and never again came close to matching that perfection.

And yet, that's what makes the perfect game so special. On any day, anyone can throw one; all it takes is the right mixture of luck, skill and, well, more luck. And yet, of the thousands of men who've toed the rubber in the majors over the past century-plus, fewer than 2 dozen have actually done it. The perfect game is the ultimate mythologizer: Pulling it off automatically earns you a permanent place in baseball lore — and for most, it will be the unquestionable highlight of their professional career.

So, in honor of Cain's feat, I've spent the majority of the day trying to figure out what the musical equivalent of a perfect game might be. Certainly, it has to be historic: an album or song that came out of nowhere to define a time or an era to such a degree that it has become the stuff of music legend. Secondly, it has to be the crowning achievement of an artist's career, especially since the overwhelming number of pitchers who have tossed perfectos are basically the MLB equivalent of one-hit-wonders (I'm looking at you, Philip Humber). Sure, the Beatles, Radiohead and Jay-Z have probably all been perfect, but, like Young or Koufax or Hunter, what's one more accolade to any of them? And finally, well, it has to be perfect: the perfect album for the time, the perfect song for the moment, the perfectly recognizable riff or sample — we're talking history here, people.

Anyway, here are my picks for music's 10 perfect games — and if there's an album or song I've missed, let me know in the comments below.

The Sex Pistols, Never Mind the Bullocks, Here's the Sex Pistols
Lean and mean, sneering and snotty, it's not only one of the most perfect albums of all time, it may very well be the most perfect debut in history. When it was released in 1977, it shocked pretty much everybody, and its historical status was only secured when the Pistols would implode following a disastrous U.S. tour in '78. In the years since, it's become a touchstone of punk, not to mention a lesson to any band that dares to fly too close to the sun. Hope you're paying attention, Dallas Braden.

The Knack, "My Sharona"
Released as a single from the band's Get the Knack debut, "Sharona" quickly surged to the top of the Billboard charts, where it would remain for six weeks (and be named the #1 song on the publication's year-end pop chart). The song's iconic guitar line (dunna-nunna-nuh-nuh!) has since become a thing of rock lore, the soundtrack to a million bar mitzvahs and just as many stadium rally chants, and though the Knack could never replicate its success, for one brief, shining moment, they were perfect.

The Sugarhill Gang, "Rapper's Delight"
It's the song that brought hip-hop out of the rec rooms and into the masses, crossing over to both the pop and R&B charts when it was released in 1979. Chances are, in the years since, you've heard its iconic bass line (sampled from Chic's "Good Times") and can probably recite its lyrics verbatim ("I said a hip hop, a hippie, a hippie to the hip hip hop ... "). Not too bad for three dudes from Englewood, New Jersey.

Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, "It Takes Two"
One of the most sampled (and revered) hip-hop tracks of the pre-breakout era (like 1988), merely reading the "It Takes Two" title is probably enough to conjure up the sound of the wailing diva belting out the hook (or those "Woo-Yeahs"). It swept the streets and crossed over to the clubs, and has since become a staple at weddings and dance parties — and no, the dynamic duo could never match its success. But they don't have to; they're in the perfecto club.

Young MC, "Bust a Move"
The biggest hit from Young's breakout Stone Cold Rhymin' album, it not only won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance, but made the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and paved the way for the rap takeover that would follow in the '90s. Oh, and Flea plays bass on it. One of the greatest hip-hop tracks of all time and probably one of the first ones you ever saw a video for on MTV. Don't just stand there, bust a move!

Alanis Morrissette, Jagged Little Pill
Buoyed by the Dave Coulier-baiting "You Oughta Know" (or any of the five smash singles that followed), Morrissette's debut sold a staggering 33 million copies worldwide and basically brought the roiling, riot-grrl spirit to the mainstream. Not surprisingly, Morrissette never again reached the heights she did here, but if you're making a list of albums that unquestionably defined the 1990s, well, this had better be on it.

Craig Mack, "Flava in Ya Ear"
The song that basically put Bad Boy on the map, it featured a cameo by a then up-and-coming Notorious B.I.G., not to mention Puff Daddy. It's stark, black-and-white video is equally iconic, though the song is perhaps best known for the fact that Mack all but disappeared following its release. Still, "Flava" is so of a time and a moment in hip hop that it's subsequently earned classic status, meaning that somewhere, Mack can rest easy.

The Verve, "Bittersweet Symphony"
Breakout, genre-defining smash from Brit-rock lifers the Verve, "Bittersweet" — and its accompanying music video — were smashes on both sides of the pond. Too bad the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards and Mick Jagger caught wind of it and sued the band for royalties, effectively ending their run just as it was beginning. But legality aside, you cannot deny the song's thrilling, chilling rush, which, 15 years after it debuted, still raises goose bumps — kind of like watching a perfect game, really.

Neutral Milk Hotel, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
When it was first released in 1998, its sparse production and spine-tingling emoting confused many — though, in the decade since, it's become a touchstone of American indie, a harrowing, haunting rumination on life, death and reincarnation (and Anne Frank) that mastermind Jeff Mangum has yet to follow up. And who knows if he ever will; pitching a second perfecto has proven impossible to date.

The Postal Service, Give Up
One of the most unlikely success stories in recent memory, it started as a project between Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and electronic musician Jimmy Tamborello, and thanks to gently bubbling hits like "Such Great Heights," it went on to become the best-selling album released on Sub Pop since Bleach, the debut from some band called Nirvana. Since then, neither man seems willing to embrace the idea of recording a follow-up, and really, why would they? Perfection usually only comes around once.

Cee Lo Green, "F--- You"
A song so huge it not only managed to make Green into a solo star, but helped launch the career of Bruno Mars too. It went from Internet sensation to the Billboard Hot 100 and has since become Green's signature song — which, given his time in the Goodie Mob and Gnarls Barkley, is certainly saying something. He'll probably never be this perfect again, but you can never take this smash away from him.

What are you musical perfect games in your book? Let us know in the comments!

8 civilians, 7 UN peacekeepers dead in Ivory Coast

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) ? Ivorian government forces will launch a military operation to hunt down the men responsible for an ambush that killed at least seven peacekeepers in an unprecedented attack on U.N. forces in the country. Officials said Saturday that at least eight civilians also were killed in the area.

Hundreds of villagers were fleeing the region near the Liberian border, though authorities were unable to confirm any additional casualties Saturday because of the remoteness of the area in southwestern Ivory Coast.

While Ivory Coast's political crisis after the November 2010 election led to violence that left some 3,000 people dead, Friday's attack was a rare assault on the United Nations, which has had a peacekeeping mission here since 2004.

"This is the first time we have ever had such a type of attack in Ivory Coast. It's a very tough time for the whole mission here right now," said Sylvie van den Wildenberg, acting spokeswoman for the U.N. mission in Ivory Coast.

An Ivorian Cabinet official who was briefed on the matter said President Alassane Ouattara requested helicopter gunships from the U.N. and expected them to arrive by Monday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Ivory Coast's deputy defense minister Paul Koffi Koffi said government forces, along with Liberian and U.N. forces, will launch an operation on June 15 to find the men responsible, whom he described as "militiamen or mercenaries."

Koffi Koffi said they could not respond sooner because it would take time to gather equipment and prepare the forces.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack "in the strongest possible terms," saying he was "saddened and outraged" about the deaths of the peacekeepers, all from Niger. He urged the government of Ivory Coast to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Later on Friday, the U.N. Security Council released a press statement condemning the attack.

Bert Koenders, the U.N. envoy to the West African nation, said the peacekeepers were part of a patrol south of the town of Tai, an area the U.N. mission recently reinforced because of threats of attacks against the civilian population. The ambush involved a large group of armed men, a U.N. official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

"Their colleagues are still in danger," Ban told reporters. "Even tonight, after the attack, more than 40 peacekeepers remain with the villagers in this remote region to protect them from this armed group."

The mayor of Tai, Desire Gnonkonte, told AP that hundreds of villagers were fleeing the area.

Van den Wildenberg said several vehicles were on a reconnaissance patrol near the village of Para on the southern axis of Tai to follow up on "rumors of movement of armed people in the area and threats on the security of civilians."

"There were several vehicles on the patrol and the leading vehicles were strongly hit," van den Wildenberg said. "The area is densely forested and very tough terrain."

Once a stable nation, the world's largest cocoa producer was split into a rebel-controlled north and government-controlled south after an attempted coup sparked civil war in 2002. A peace deal in March 2007 brought key rebel leaders into the administration and offered hope for a single government after years of foundering accords and disarmament plans.

But the country headed to the brink of civil war after a presidential runoff in early 2011 when then-president Laurent Gbagbo refused to concede defeat after losing to Ouattara, the internationally recognized winner of the election. Gbagbo was arrested with the help of U.N. and French forces in April 2011, and is now facing charges of war crimes at The Hague. Ouattara was sworn in as president soon after.

Following Gbagbo's arrest, many of the mercenaries and militiamen who fought for him fled across the porous border into Liberia's forests, or clandestinely, into its refugee camps.

Western Ivory Coast has remained particularly unstable, and Human Rights Watch said earlier this week that armed groups in Liberia who supported Gbagbo have killed at least 40 civilians in cross-border raids into Ivory Coast since July. The deaths have all been near Tai, Human Rights Watch said.

"In the four cross-border attacks since June 2011, the motivation appears to have been both political vengeance and related to land conflict - issues that overlap in Ivory Coast's volatile west. Those killed or whose houses were burned predominantly belong to ethnic groups that largely voted for president Ouattara," the group said in its report.

Matt Wells, West Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch, told AP that the organization hasn't confirmed details of the attack but "pro-Gbagbo militants have conducted repeated raids from Liberia into this region of Ivory Coast."

"The Gbagbo camp often resorted to inciting rhetoric against U.N. personnel during the Ivorian crisis, though today's deadly attack is the first of its kind during the recent Ivorian crisis," Wells said

"Liberian and Ivorian authorities need to quickly work together to bring to account those involved in this heinous act," he said.

At the end of April, the U.N. said there were about 9,400 peacekeeping troops, 200 military observers and 1,350 international police in the mission along with civilian staff. Over 40 countries are contributing military personnel.

How a shrimp's 200-lb. punch could lead to better football helmets

Scientists have marveled at how the mantis shrimp breaks open its prey, but only now are engineers learning how the shrimp's club is built ? and how that could help humans.?

Tread lightly around the mantis peacock shrimp. Up to 7 inches long, this crustacean sports gregarious colors ? and an extraordinarily powerful, resilient club for whacking its prey.

Now, a team of scientists has uncovered the secrets of the club's construction, unrolling a blueprint that holds the promise of a new generation of lightweight, impact- and shock-resistant materials for products ranging from body armor and electric cars to football helmets that better shield players from head injuries.

Indeed, the researchers already have designed composite materials based on the club's natural design that have successfully withstood several types of high-velocity munitions, says David Kisailus, an assistant professor of engineering at the University of California at Riverside, who along with colleagues from six other institutions conducted the study.

The peacock mantis shrimp feeds on some of the hardest nuts to crack in the ocean ? snails, other crustaceans, as well as other forms of shellfish.?It does so by unleashing its club repeatedly at unusually high speeds until the shells of its prey crack open enough to expose the shrimp's meal.

How it does this is crucial to understanding the enormous stresses it is able sustain.

Like a praying mantis, the shrimp have a folded appendage near their heads. The appendage resembles a football punter's tightly draw leg just before he unleashes the kick. The appendage has a latch that locks the joint until a muscle in the upper portion of the appendage has fully contracted. When the shrimp releases the latch, it unleashes the pent-up energy in the muscle, flinging the appendage outward, explains Shelia Patek, a biologist at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, who?uncovered a spring-like material at the joint that further energizes the strike.

Dr. Patek and fellow researchers have clocked the shrimp's punt at more than 45 miles an hour ? underwater. That makes it the new world champ for so-called feeding strikes ? the movement animals make to nail their prey. It's nearly twice as fast as a punch a boxer typically throws in open air and delivers a force of more than 200 pounds, with the club accelerating with a force of some 10,000 Gs ? 500 times more acceleration force than humans can endure.

And that isn't all. Patek's team also found that the strike imparted a second rattling impulse to a creature's shell that came quickly on the heels of the first strike. When the researchers examined high-speed video, they saw a brief flash of light at the point of contact ? the telltale signs of cavitation.

Solar Panels on Your Roof: Energy Efficient and Practical

Roofing materials have developed and changed through the years, from the roofing innovations introduced by the Greeks and Romans who utilized slate roofing tiles, to a smorgasbord of roofing hardware today. Recent ingenious products like solar panels are now being used by installing them strategically on roofs to help homeowners save more energy. With rising costs, energy efficiency is a much-sought quality in home development. Gone are the days when just having a roof over your head, without thought to its energy-saving feature, was merely enough.

Recent innovations in roofing have opened new avenues for home owners who want energy-saving benefits and roof appeal at the same time. Though solar panel innovations are not yet widespread in many communities today, homeowners are becoming aware of the viability of solar roofing for its aesthetic and environmentally sensible values. Before you decide on solar panels for your roof, consider the following points, however beneficial they've proven to be.

Major adjustments to form and size on the roofing surface to accommodate solar panels have to be performed, as well as modifications to existing materials. Remember these changes cost money, but your commitment to the benefits on your home will pay off over the long term. You may need to have the shingles, underlayment, trusses, rafters, and flashings of your roof reinforced in order to carry the weight of the solar panels.

This technology is available in Lafayette, Louisiana, where several households and parishes have already attached solar panels to their roofs. If you are living in this fast-developing, energy-efficient community, you might consider this viable option the next time you are thinking of repairing or replacing your roof. Having solar panels attached to your roof is no task for an amateur. The complex challenge of roofing repair demands the skill of professionals. It is advisable to contact a Lafayette roofing company to help you in this task.

In Lafayette roof modifications go beyond conventional roofing standards. Not all roofing companies can help design or plan an energy-generating device for your roof. Research the various roofing companies in Lafayette that offers the services you need. You also need to check the credibility and legitimacy of these roofing companies to avoid complications of bad jobs later on.

Gather testimonials from previous customers and know what they think about the company's services and products. Before you spend money, be prepared to ask the questions: "is this the best service that I can get", or "are there better products that are within my reach?" Research matters because it will help you find the most capable Lafayette roofing company that can help you with your roof innovations.
